Help with overclocking a 4790k?

The stock all-core turbo frequency is 4.2 GHz on the 4790k.

The stock "rated operating frequency" is 4.0

The stock all-core turbo frequency is 4.2 "if adequate power, temperature, and current headroom exist", otherwise it goes down to 4.0 (until it reaches 100C when it will throttle).

Edit for stupid over-reaction. I did enable XMP, hence the 4.4 turbo. I didn't realize this changed Turbo. For some reason I thought that the 4.4 Turbo was being disputed. Hope my brain starts working again when I quit my graveyard shift job at the end of the month.

That does not change the stock specs of the processor. My motherboard does not use the 1-core turbo frequency on all cores when the BIOS is set to default settings. It only does so when I change the overclock profile to XMP or Manual, or change the memory frequency manually. Are you sure that the fail-safe default settings on your motherboard turn on MCE automatically while leaving the memory frequency on Auto and not using XMP?

I think it was enabled by default. I don't remember enabling it myself. Unless I enabled XMP on my first boot and my memory doesn't serve me well. In that case, I stand corrected. Worst thing is, I had to disable it at first because I was using the boxed Intel cooler for a couple of weeks, so 4.4GHz on all 4 didn't quite work, as you can imagine. I started believing that below 90C was for the weak.

I'm glad to know that the experts on these forums know more than AIDA64, AISuite, and Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. Because all of these show 4.4 on all cores for turbo. The only settings I changed in the Bios were Enable XMP and Performance. Guess I will believe my own lying eyes.

So you enabled XMP and Performance... And you don't expect it to do 4.4GHz? Disable those and try stock settings and I bet you won't see 4.4GHz on all 4 cores.

on Most Asus MB when you enable XMP it then runs its multi-core enhancement code ,even though if you check by default its enabled but doesn't do anything until XMP .

Well, I did some overclocking today and my result .... is about the same as others.

4.7 GHz, auto vcore goes up to 1.3 volts, and load temps on all cores is around 90 C. Too hot for me, but fun seeing what it would do.
