help with personal web server..

i just installed personal webserver off a windows 98cd, im running windows ME right now..can anyone pleaes explain to me how people can access my site? i opened up the wizard and clicked website and it made a small lil webpage..then on the main part of the personal web manager it says that my homepage is available at "http://echau"..i can access that on my computer, but how can other people access it? i tried going to http://myip# but it doesnt work?

sorry, i don't have that installed... but if you're still stuck and really need to get this done, give apache a shot. it's pretty easy to configure, though probably not as easy as personal web server.

what kind of internet connection do you have?
if dsl or cable, do you have a firewall/router?

first make sure that webserver is running (check control panel for it)

next to test it for yourself.. type http://localhost
that will pull up the stuff on your hard drive.

Next get teh people you IP..

If you got a firewall software like zonealarm.. make sure you enable the software to act as a server and see if you can open a port...

if you got a hardware firewall .. go into that firewall and make a port passthru or just bind your internal IP to teh router (bad idea)..

However if your like me.. I have port 666 mapped to my machine.. so when a request comes on that the webserver responds.. port 80 is blocked.

i have a t1 connection here at school and am using a router to split the connection w/ me and my roommate..

well its your router..

now since you guys have split the connection.. assign internal static IP's to your machines.. give yourself something like 192.168.x.y (check what your router provides.. type winipcfg in run box and see what you come up with.

Once you have assigned an IP to your machine (something like 192.168.x.15 and you have given your gateway and DNS stuff) open up the router's control panel...
and open a port to your machine.. just a port.. not the whole thing.. if you want you can open the whole thing but its a good idea to open only a few ports. Then tell us your IP.

im sorry but i dont understand most of that stuff..

i just know that i have a static ip, 128.54.189.130
but how would i oopen up the router's control panel, and then open a prot to my comp?

it was already here when i moved into the dorms..its a Cisco uBR900

according to cisco the uBR900 is a Cable Access Router
this means there is a firewall
the firewall is probably blocking access to your webserver over port 80

you might need to get into the firmware and forward port 80.

that sucks :\, any idea how to get into the firmware to change it to allow access on port 80? or is it really complicated?
