help with php and mysql

I am just started to get back into web design it has been like 2 years since i really worked with it. The last thing i was working with was xhtml. on remote servers I just started getting back into web design for myself and am trying to create a site so i can have forum. So from what I have researched i need to use php and mysql and apache. Can anybody suggest a good site where i can learn about creating with php and mysql and how to set up an apache server. Any suggestions or if anyone has any templates they would like to share so i can dissect them and learn how to do it myself i would greatly appreciate it.

check out phpBB and phpnuke, they usually have tutorials in their FAQs and the forums are awesome resources

Do you really want to create your own message board? That's a pretty huge undertaking. If you just want to use one, there's phpBB and probably a lot of others.

Yeah. I'm using Invisionboard right now and just looking at the code is scary. They put a lot of time into making this forum.

Personally I'm a big fan of Webvelosix but hey that's just me. You might want to get ahold of a copy of the Apache Toolbox. It allows you to install all of the stuff in one fell swoop and configure it properly with Apache. Takes out a lot of the hassle & I would highly recommend it.

Scary as in lots of PHP mixed with lots of HTML and some javascript along some MySQL to top it off. Also, scary as in big with lots of files to look through to make the tiniest changes.

Ouch. Any non-trivial webapp should have DB access, code logic, and formatting all abstracted away from each other. I looked at a little code from myphpadmin once, and it was nasty, pretty much what you're describing, but I figured perhaps it was in the minority. I guess it's just more proof that PHP encourages bad habits.
