Currently I am using i7 930 bloomfield
8gbs of ram
EVGA 760 SLI

I noticed while attempting to play COD:ghosts my cpu is hitting 80-100% in the task manager so i suppose its time for an upgrade. Should i do i5 or i7 haswell ? This will be mostly for gaming.
At the moment I have everything on low/medium. I generally do not overlock, but my fps is abysmall and i want to destroy this machine. Another questions is will my overall performance improve?

Yes, your overall performance will significantly improve, especially since you have not overclocked your i7.

Most decent (non-budget) motherboards have pretty good Auto OC utility. Asus for example has a fast tune option which is guaranteed to give you system stability with a pretty decent OC. For example, it will OC your i5 or i7 (I have had both i5 4670k and i7 4770k) to at least 4GHz.

The difference between a 4GHz Haswell and an i7 930 Bloomfield at a measly 2.6GHz stock clock speeds is going to be at least 30-50% for gaming and other CPU intensive applications. It will definitely allow you to max out any game with the rest of your setup.

I have the z87-A and I love it . z87 pro is a step up so all I can do is recommend it even more.

I have dealt with MSI motherboards in the past, I think they are a decent brand as well but so far Asus is #1 in my book when it comes to motherboards.

$2-250 for motherboard and CPU?

Asus then for sure. Even with this budget Asus board, I am getting very decent OC results with my i7 4770k.

However, you may want to wait for others to chime in as well if they have had good experience with other Manufacturers of the z87 boards. I've only had personal experience with Asus z87 boards, and I have been extremely pleased so far in the 2 months I owned this system.

I'd recommend a Gigabyte Z87X-UD4. I bought one for this office box (I needed the features over a H87/B85 chipset) and its flawless, plus its designed to be pushed hard. Only ever had one Asus board so can't comment there. Runs around $180.

Spending $300 on a board is not going to make the rig last that much longer versus a $100-150 board. First, because the motherboard is going to make the least performance difference. Second, because the socket itself might prevent you from future upgrades. You would be much better off going with a $150-200 board (which is still considered fairly high end) and saving the rest for an upgrade or investing the rest in a better GPU or better cooling for your CPU if you are going to OC.

A haswell rig will definitely last you at least 2 years, and probably more if you are going to overclock.

Sandy bridge is still going strong and it is about to hit the 3 year mark.

Just upgrade the motherboard and CPU and you should be good to go. THere is no need to upgrade your power supply or graphics cards. You might have to upgrade your RAM if it doesn't play nice with the Haswell but it is worth a try. If not, it only costs about 50 bucks for 8GB.

Have you tried disabling hyperthreading? Doing so could enable you to have a better overclock. Even if you dont overclock, the game is/was once upon a time handicapped by HT. I dont know if they fixed it...
