I dont know squat about phones

I got an unlocked samsung i5500 phone for someone as a present, its got android 2.2 on it which is the best it accepts, its still got the "3" network logo on it (which i assume it used to be locked into) and may have a bunch of unnecessary crap, im not sure. Can i do a clean install with it is this possible with android? Or will that ah heck the unlockedness of the phone?

Works fine as is but it would be nice to know if the same rules that apply to windows apply here

Okay so ive got to install something called clockworkmod to get cynogen mod, no big deal.

- Need to use odin to install clockworkmod for the first time, okay fine

- Try to flash 3 times for ~45 minutes, brick phone

- The latest clockworkmod.tar is "broken" somehow and dosent flash with odin, fantastic then!

- Have to use old .tar file, then use something called rom manager to install the new clockworkmod in .zip form

- Install old clockworkmod.tar with odin, works, phone unbricked, try to install new one with rom manager but it dosent work it needs root

- Have to use universal androot which dosent work it tells me "you fail fu goo" or something.... Brick wall...

:'''''''''(

This never ends! I just want to clean install then go play skyrim, thats all i want...

Thank god linux never caught on with desktops

Gonna try the stock samsung with odin, see how that pans out. Hopefully it will still work despite the old clockworkmod that is now installed on it.

Just be glad you're on a platform where "brick" just means you have to try Odin again, and failing to read thoroughly *beforehand* doesn't = dead device.

Yeah, I have a fascinate (i5000) and it just takes a while to learn the ins and outs of clockworkmod and odin. XDA-developers is an excellent resource, just make sure you don't ask something that's already been answered in an FAQ or they get very testy.

Worst case scenario, just get an ODIN froyo stock image and go back to stock if you mess up. I run Go Launcher over MIUI (android v2.3.6, some november build) and I LOVE it.

I killed an Android phone dead so it's definitely possible, and not even that hard to do. I was flashing a radio version they recommended for this ROM I wanted to install. Only thing it decided to crap out in the middle and I had a "brick" there are other ways to "brick" Android devices too.

Samsung phones are generally more difficult to brick than models from other manufacturers.

Yeah i gave up and just went with stock samsung firmware.

Managed to get the latest clockworkmod installed, it then installed the latest port of cynogensmod 1.7.2 onto the phone but then it wouldn't start up... it just said "android" on the screen and sat there. I wouldve tried the 1.7.1 and 1.7.0 versions but ah heck it im not doing all that again lol.

are you flashing directly from CWM or from ROM Manager?

I had a similar issue on my G2 where if I flashed CM7 from ROM manager, it would just hang on the boot screen. If I flashed it directly from CWM Recovery, it worked fine.

No idea why tho.

Directly from CWM using the install from .zip option. I didn't know ROM manager could even flash cyanogenmod, i was just been using it as a way to boot into CWM.
