Help with Sempron 2800+?

I want to build a cheap rig for testing and such, I ordered a mb and this proc from newegg:

Then I saw this one at newegg:

Can someone tell me what I am missing? The second one says 64, that seems to be the only difference, same price even. Did I buy a crappier one at the same price? If you buy the 64 must you run XP 64bit edition with it? I am usually an intel guy so I am kinda lost here. I wasn't even aware there were two versions of the Sempron 2800+. If someone could give me some quick schooling I would appreciate it.

Its probably one of the new Semprons with 64 bit enabled.

It will run exactly the same as the other one except you will be able to run a 64 bit OS if you want to. You dont' need one, though.

youll be fine...same chip, just works with 64 bit...just like a P4 3.6 vs. a P4 3.6 w/ EMT....no diff, just supports the 64 bits...

64 bit wont be standard for a while anyway, by that time, u can get a better cpu...

I also just noticed that the 64 version supports sse3 and the one I bought does not. Is it worth exchanging for that reason, these things are the same price??

CPU-Z says it has the 64 bit enabled...

Yes, you bought a crappier CPU for the same price. Call Newegg immediately and request the 64-bit version. It's the latest E6 revision with x64 & SSE3. Maybe you can catch them before they ship it.

I'd tried to get the chips switched. While SSE3 makes no difference now, and you may not use 64bit windows, both features are still nice to have and will become useful later down the road.

Either CPU-Z is mistaken, or you are. The CPU you bought is definitely not 64-bit-capable. A Sempron 2800+ with 64-bit extensions but no SSE3 doesn't exist.

I ordered the non-64 bit version to as it was a little cheaper and was trying to keep this a cheap as possible. I wasn't aware of the SSE3 or a possibly better memory controller.

anyway, i read somewhere people saying some were coming out with the 64bit turned on, so I checked it with cpu-z just to see.

But this has now peaked my interest, so I just started loading the 64 bit version of XP.

And it seems to be working!!

BUT.. OP..for the same money...go for the one that officially supports the 64 bit and get that extra goodness!!!

Well, newegg shipped way too fast for me to change my order. I guess I will just live with this processor for now. If I want to exchange I will have to pay shipping. This is going to be used in a test citrix server running w2k3, so I can't think why it would need 64bit or sse3, still kinda makes me mad though. Thanks for all your help everyone.
