Help with setting up linux router across subnets

Hi,
I am a little confused about how exactly I should go about this. I have a linux machine running a stock 2.4.14 kernel on Redhat , with two ethernet cards. What I want to do is configure the machine with the proper route statements to route traffic between two subnets with different IP ranges. What combination of route add commands do I need? This should be easy but I must be doing something wrong as nothing seems to work.


eth0

IP: 192.12.200.10
Netmask: 255.255.255.0


eth1

IP: 192.168.0.10
Netmask: 255.255.252.0

Whats you're outgoing gateway address and what adpter is it on? (default route)

I'm no expert so give me a few minutes to figure it out

route ADD 192.12.200.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx insert your gateway in xxx.xxx (assuming this is the outbound route)

route ADD 192.168.0.10 MASK 255.255.252.0 192.168.0.10

I think you have trouble here if one of the subnets has two routers. is that the case? One outbound and one going to the other subnet? You would have to have the outgoing router (Which is probably the default route on the upper level subnet) bounce the packets back down to your new router/system to be forwarded to the second network. Tricky, eh?

My outbound to internet address is 192.12.200.99 on the 255.255.255.0 netmask

The only way I can think of doing it would be to have a router on the outgoing port that was pointing all traffic destined for the .252 mask subnet back at your intranet bridge for routing.

Otherwise, you have to set a persistent static route to the intranet bridge on EACH computer on the network only for that particular subnet.

The ideal way to do it is to have both subnets AND the upstream connection (all three trunks) branching from a single router.
