I'm working with the 30 day evaluation trial for this backup software.
I'd love to get it to work for me because it has the unique feature of including a virtual environment where you can test your backed up images and make sure they work. I know that isn't a guarantee that I'll be able to recover from them, but is a very critical necessary condition. Also, as opposite to the Windows utility, it backs-up everything, so a full image should bring a full disk (all partitions) back to where it was before a crash.
However, I'm having trouble making basic things work:
I'm running backup ups for my Dell E6510 (500 GB drive, about 50% full)
1)A full backup of all my 4 disk partitions (<250 GB) over USB2 or WiFi (I run two different full backup tests) took 5 & 6.5 hrs respectively. That sounds kinda slow, doesn't it?
2) More worrisome, after the full backup was done I run a differential backup of just the C: drive to see if it worked, and it took another two hours. I can't imagine what could have taken that long. All I did while the system was doing the full backup was web-browsing! Why would a few gigs of data need to be re-imaged?
3) One key problem with these type of "volume level" backup imaging sw is that it runs into miserable trouble w/the propitiatory OEM-reserved partitions, etc. I need to make sure I restore every single partition to the exact same place where it was. I purchased a 500 GB external drive to run the virtual machine recovery, but I'm not sure what the exact procedure for recovering each partition, in the right order, is.
The forum at Storagecraft is very active, but the vast majority of users are 100 times more knowledgeable than I am and they assume a level of technical knowledge much higher I have, so asking for help there is not always productive.
Anybody here familiar with ShadowProtect that can help? I actually spent many hours trying to find a local IT services shop that works with this software and caters to end-users. I came up completely empty-handed. Any tips or leads would be greatly appreciated!
