I know it's a Ford and not a snobby nameplate but if you are looking at 40K to drop, see if you can get into a new 2011 Ford Explorer. The Limited fits right into your price range. Interior is seriously nice, very refined...although might be too big for you. But MPG is basically a wash compared to the Edge and the interior on the Explorer is better

An exploder over an Audi?

No, no I don't think so.

If I had that kind of money to drop on a ride, I would so buy a 60's muscle car, drop a crate engine in it and rebuild it with current technology. You'd have style, handling and, more power than you knew what to do with.

I can't wait to start one of those projects

A4/A6 would likely get my money or a used 5 series.

If you can get over the looks, the Acura TL SH-AWD drives really nicely.

Another car definitely worth checking out would be a the new M37 from Infiniti.

Cadillac CTS and Lincoln MKS are also worthy cars. The CTS is "sportier" and looks better in my opinion while the Lincoln drives like butter if that is what you are looking for.

I don't see the appeal of the EX35. It's too small to be a proper SUV, but if you don't care about cargo area, why not get a car instead and get better handling and gas mileage? Hell, a sedan would be more comfortable for four people and probably hold more stuff as well.

Only reason to get one would be if you never have more than one passenger and you really love how it looks.
Agreed. My in laws are empty nesters and they live in downtown Portland. They thought about small SUVs but they preferred the car-like handling that the EX35 offers. Also, it gives them a taller cargo area without being too huge since they live in the city. The rear seat is actually not bad space-wise, and their grandkids are the ones back there most often anyway. Also, my FIL is a gadget guy and (at the time, at least) the EX35 had a ton of features for the price when compared to other sedans and wagons in the class.
For them it was a good fit, but like I said it's not for everyone.

I saw a couple brand new caddy's driving around the other day and I have to admit, they looked nice. One was all black with chrome wheels and accents. It was pretty hot. I still prefer Audi myself, but you can get a CTS for cheaper than an A6.

A4 all the way. Got it for a good price and never had issues so far. Granted it's a 2010 A4 with 15k miles, it obviously shouldn't.

Handles like a dream, pretty darn fast for me, sexy outside and inside. Really an awesome car to drive.

Hopefully one day I can get an S5!

Edit: And yes even though they made more room for the back in the new Audi's, it's still freaking tiny. Even the A8L is pretty small in the back.

Co-worker of mine has a EX35; looks kind of goofy to me, but it is very nice inside and drives very well. It has love it/hate it styling, but the car is very solid and has a very reliable VQ drivetrain as well.

Should i start by just getting some internet quotes?

go to www.truecar.com and get what the lowest price in your area is, then take that quote to a dealer and tell them to beat it. Thats about as low as you're going to get.

Infiniti has gone the way of Jaguar. They're still around, but no one pays them much attention. They're like a cheap Lexus but at the same price point.

dunno, i'd take the new M37/M56 over the 5 series any day. sat in both at the philly car show and the infiniti has come a long way.

do they just give you pricing over the phone? I've talked/emailed a couple dealerships and they want me to answer a bunch of financing/terms questions before even giving me a price....

On dealer did that, I didn't bother giving them business. If all of the dealers are doing that to you though you may not have that choice. What I did was get pre-approval from a 3rd party bank so I knew I was qualified to finance the price range I was negotiating in and told the dealers that I was.

What I did was call dealer A:

"What's your best price on an MS3?"
"24,000 for a demo with 3k miles"

Then I called dealer B:

"dealer A says i can get a demo with 3k miles for 24,000, can you beat that?"
"yes, we'll sell you a new one for 24,000"

Then I callled dealer C:

"dealer b said they'd sell me a new MS3 for 24k, but if you give me 23k i'll buy it next week"
"sold!"
