My system resources is usually under 80%
is that not good?
should I let windows manage my virtual memory, or let me specify?
and if I do specify, what should it be set at?

ASUS a7v 133
AMD Thunderbird 1000 Mghz
Windows 98se
512 mb crucial ram
3D Prophet 2 Ultra

It's not that bad... it really depends what and how many things start up when Windows starts.

If you were to only have "systray" and "explorer" running in the background you should see about 95% to 98%.... Start to subtrack from here.

If you "CTRL + ALT + DEL"... how many or what is running?

As for your virtual memory, you are probably never hitting it because of the amount of hardware memory. Besides, it's not going to affect your resources.

What you do want to look out for is resources that keep getting lower and lower (memory leak).

I'll quote myself

<< keeps getting lower and lower (memory leak). >>

If you start with 80% and after only 3hrs it's at 50%... You have a memory leak. Keep in mind that some percentage loss is to be expected!

according to Microsoft, win98 using a different mem management strategy to enhance the mem cached data reusability - in other words, it won't purge the allocated memory block until it sees the needs or some threshold meets. Thinking of it like a LRU purging but with big expiration counter... it's leak strictly speaking, but win98 core handles it... hopefully

most of the time, win9x system craps out the "low sys resource" error is because the 640KB 16bit Dos segment is fully loaded with craps...

It's a waste of time looking at that number, unless you understand exactly how the Windows memory manager works. Don't worry about it.

And no, a lower number doesn't mean you're leaking memory.
