Help with Thermal Paste

I'm kinda new at this and I'm not sure how to properely apply the thermal paste to my fc-pga cumine. If someone could give me a link or just post how much and where I should put the paste, I'd be very greatfull.

Go buy some foam hair rollers from a variety store. Like $1.29 for a pack of them. Squeeze a small amount on to the core, & use the end to spread the paste on the core. Repeatedly "dabbing" at it will spread it nicely. It works very well for me. Produces a very even coat.

Use a thin coat of heat sink compound between the heat sink and simiconductor to enhance heat transfer.
for best result the heat sink and semiconductor should have a tight mechanical bond.

just put a small dab in the center of the slug, then put your heatsink on. the pressure from the clip will create a very thin application area, the excess will squeeze out(which you need not worry about)

Subzero Nice article. I agree that a VERY small and thin amount is all that's necessary. One other thing I've found that helps out is to lay a machinist's or any other type of straight rule along the bottom of the HS to see how far out of flatness it is. Typically .020-.030" is not uncommon. That's a pretty big gap for thermal compound to cover.

On everything except an Alpha I've always found heatsinks to be slightly concave on the bottom from the extrusion process in manufacturing. I'll lay some sandpaper on the table of my table saw (or any other flat surface) and lap the bottom until it's flat. It's only a 10-15 minute process but I think it's worth the effort. Maybe you could add an article to your site on lapping the bottom of HS for better performance or possibly offer it as a service. I wonder how many poeple actually check this. Maybe I should do a poll.
