Latest Update:

Great to be back home--as always. My trip was as memorable as it was enjoyable. It wasn't a very warm welcome though. For absolutely no reason, other than my name and appearance, I was "referred" to a control check at immigration. They took me to a room and said it will take a maximum of 20 minutes. The officers inside were very unprofessional. So much so that if this was Pakistan, passengers would have made a scene. There were two desks working on cases ranging from asylum seekers to potential terrorist threats. The officers chatted amongst themselves more than they worked. They were no very happy about--in the words--dealing with "shit" like us. And they really treated us like shit--very rude. The officers would take frequent breaks often leaving both desks empty. They told each other "why should we care when they (obviously referring to their higher-ups) don't?" I also got the impression they were convinced that this detention did not help.

When after two hours, I lost my patience and politely asked one of the officers how long it would take. He said 8 hours. When my turn finally came after around 4 hours of waiting, they asked me what I do, why I was here and when I'm going back. It took about two minutes and could have easily be done at the main counter. It was fairly obvious what race and religion were being profiled and going by the mood of the room, profiling only increases resentment towards the USA. The worst part of my experience though, was that the officer forgot to stamp my passport. I don't know if all officers are like this but at the end of my trip I concluded that JFK must be the worst airport to land at. Airline staff and TSA (I passed smoothly, but some others did not) were equally rude.

However, the immigration team partially redeemed themselves when I crossed back from Canada. They took a couple of hours trying to find the missing stamp and then the officer was kind enough to stamp my passport. He said without a stamp, I would have been harassed again at the airport.

Anyway, the 4 hour long detention meant that I missed my shuttle into NJ. I was too tired to drive so I decided to stay at a hotel. My mistake was to go for the cheapest--Super 8 was bad. But it was only on night before taking the bus to NJ so it wasn't too bad. In the morning, a friend showed up at the hotel, took us around Manhattan.

We visited the Empire State, Macy's and then walked to the Metropolitan Museum. The museum was impressive even though we did not have enough time to see it all. Fun day all in all, and provided a day is hardly enough to experience a city, I prefer London.

Over the next week, we travelled to Cornell and then to Niagra Falls. Horseshoe falls are amazing and Maid of the Mist was one boat ride I'll remember for a long time. Great experience. Our real vacation started when we flew to Las Vegas.

Day 1 Stayed the night at Mesquite and then drove to Zion NP. We did the Narrows trail and it was one of the highlights of our trip. Amazing.

Day 2 Next day we went to Bryce. The views were breathtaking.

Day 3 We had intended to take a swim in Lake Powell but there were strong winds and they weren't renting boats. We surveyed the area, visited a few viewing points and Glenn Damn.

Day 4 Lake Powell--Some jet skiing and swimming. I got sun burnt pretty bad. My bad. Should have used lotion. From there we drove to Las Vegas.

Day 5 and 6--We stayed at Encore by Wynn and while the hotel itself and its rooms are posh, the service was no where near 5 stars level. Our bags arrived an hour late, the WiFi in our rooms did not work, and they were about to charge us for a bottle of water from the mini bar that was never there to begin with. From there we flew to Orlando. We saw Ka which was pretty good. The death of one of its actors just two days later came as a shock.

Day 7-- Islands of Adventure is absolutely awesome. Hogsmeade and Hogwarts were like a dream come true. The best amusement Park I've visited.

Day 8--Wet N Wild. Decent waterpark with rude staff. It was a rainy Sunday with long queues. We stood for one hour and there was a storm and the ride was closed. Luckily, most people left and even though it was cold by early evening, we were able to do almost all rides with little wait.

Day 9-- Universal has been totally revamped since I was there in 1998. Only a couple of rides that were still there. The new rides? Awesome: Simpsons and Despicable Me were absolutely hilarious.

Day 10-- Some shopping. Not impressed by the Orlando Mall. Nothing to see.

Day 11 (3 July)--Magic Kingdom. I regret going there. There was nothing new--and while the fireworks were spectacular, I should have visited Seaworld instead.

Day 12--More shopping in the 4th July sales in outlets. Everything else closed early so we missed out on home shops.

Day 13--flew back to NJ, visited some homeware shops and left for home.

New Update:

I have a revised plan for the West Coast. What do you think?

I'll be arriving around the 14th of June. I have some business to take care off and will be spending a few days in the Eastern Cities as well.

25th June Fly to Vegas from Phil/NYC 4 nights
29th Fly to Salt Lake City, rent car. Sleep in SLC overnight.
30th Drive to Tetons National Park. Sleep in Jackson overnight.
1st Drive to Yellowstone NP
3rd Drive back to Jackson. Fly to NYC

Excluding food and shopping, that trip is costing me at estimated $2500 for the both of us. Seems right?

Where should I spend the fourth?
5th Back to Karachi

The only thing with this itinerary is that I will miss LA/SF. I could fly to those cities on the weekend preceding the 25th (which is a Monday), but I'm getting a feeling it will get too hectic. A friend of mine has an Intervalworld holiday exchange membership which he is letting me utilize. There are frequent slots in LV but I can't find one on my desired dates as yet but they might open up. There are many slots available in Orlando and 5* hotels keep popping up now and then. It would cost me an additional $300x2 for the tickets and $200 for the exchange fee for the week. It would also mean I would have to sacrifice a couple of days from Vegas and Yellowstone at the least to get 4-5 days there. My wife isn't too keen on Orlando, but with a nice resort I may be able to convince her. At the moment, I'm not convinced myself.

My wife and I planning a trip to the USA in June lasting 3 weeks. We're a young couple interested in:

1) Nature (national parks, lakes)
2) Historical architecture.
3) Shopping. We are furnishing our new house and wanted to buy some (practical and aesthetic) accessories.
4) Las Vegas
5) The wife also wants to visit Beverly Hills.

I have an uncle in NJ and that's where we are going to land. We also considered an Alaskan cruise, but my wife does not have a valid Canadian visa.

Budget: $6000

Since you're going to Las Vegas anyway, I think it's a must to see the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. Not sure what the allure of Beverly Hills is other than for gawking at celebrities and going to stores that sell stuff you can't afford. I would not go out of my way to get to BH.

There are Alaskan cruises from Seattle that don't go to Canada.

How do you plan to travel within the US?

The US is huge and the places you mention are not exactly near each other. How do you plan on traveling between your destinations while here?

Yeah - if that $6000 needs to include travel you are going to spend a bit on flights given that you mention NJ, LV, LA and Seattle (most likely Alaskan cruise departure city). Probably $1500 total on airfare getting between those cities

Can't help wiht vegas or beverly hills, but I can help with 1-3

From New Jersey Head down to DC - take in all the historic monuments, see the whitehouse, go shopping at any of the various malls, etc.

From DC, head south the Colonial Williamsburg (3.5-4 hour drive). Visit the historic downtown, william and mary college, etc. Go shopping in the antique malls. Take the kids to Busch Gardens. Visit the Plum tree island national wildlife refuge and Great Dismal Swamp (its prettier than it sounds) national park.

From williamsburg, head south to the Outer Banks of North Carolina - spend a few days on some of the best beaches you will ever see. Good shopping, fishing, etc.

From OBX, head south to Charleston North/South Carolina - get some good bbq, enjoy the old southern architecture, etc.

From Charleston, head south to Savannah Georgia/Tybee Island - lots of historic architecture, good food, national parks (beaches), etc.

From Savannah, head south to Jacksonville FLA and pick up return flight to wherever.

If you're flying into NJ, be sure to hit up Boston & NYC - at the very least NYC, you can spend a whole week there and still not see everything. Boston is very historic and has a great Freedom Trail you can follow if you like to walk. From there you can drive to Niagara Falls, which is pretty cool.

From there I'd fly out to Vegas, drive to the parks you want to see, and then drive to Beverly Hills. I've done the Utah to California commute a few times and Nevada is really pretty to drive through. The Grand Canyon is also out in that general area if you don't mind driving around.

I would also second this, if you're willing to drive...the Carolina beaches are great, DC is awesome to visit, and Savannah is it's own little paradise. I have a lot of friends in Savannah and they absolutely love it. And be sure to hit a Waffle House or two on your way down

And if you're going to go down south, make the drive to the Keys - it's the only place on earth I've been to where the locations look as good as the postcards!

If you are going to DC and then Williamsburg I would recommend hitting up Shenandoah National park, it's heading a little southwest of DC instead of straight south to Williamsburg, but it is a beautiful park (in my opinion anyway)

A little bit more information about budget would be useful. The best way to see all of America is to rent an RV and drive everywhere. But there are long stretches of nothing along the way. You could start in New Jersey, spend a day or 2 there, tour New England / mid atlantic, then drive across country to vegas and LA and up to SF, then fly home from there.

It sounds like you need a month not a week to get all this done!

Well he said three. But with the places he wants to hit, at least one of them is going to be spent waiting in airports and/or on the road. I think this is something you are are going to have to make a compromise on and pick a side of the country and enjoy it. Trying to split it up so much sounds like a nightmare to me.

Does the OP have any intention (or ability) to drive here?

Who cares?

My wife and I planning a trip to the USA in June lasting 3 weeks. We're a young couple interested in:

1) Nature (national parks, lakes) (Western part of the US, figure 1-2 days per area) - Recommend, Yellowstone (MT),Grand Teton(WY), Estes (CO), Zion/Bryce (UT)
2) Historical architecture. (anywhere along the East Coast. figure 1-2 days per city)
3) Shopping. We are furnishing our new house and wanted to buy some (practical and aesthetic) accessories. (Shipping back will be $$)
4) Las Vegas (Gaming or sightseeing - staying off strip will increase your value, as will being there Sun-Thurs) Grand Canyon - North Rim/Valley of Fire (1-2 days)
5) The wife also wants to visit Beverly Hills. (See LV option below)

I have an uncle in NJ and that's where we are going to land. We also considered an Alaskan cruise, but my wife does not have a valid Canadian visa.

As others have stated, you do not need a Canadian visa for the cruse.

You will need a car to see areas - get one that is large and comfortable. Use Google Maps to get an idea of distances; you will have roads that will allow 120kph.

If you want the Alaska cruise; you could fly from LV to Seattle and pick up a ship from that point.

Much of what the wife would want from Beverly Hills can also be found in the shopping malls of the high end casinos in LV

Note that LV can be getting warm in June. easily hit 35-40 degrees C

Flying from coast to coast will burn a half day time.
Any other flight will be 4-6 hours spent in airport or in air.

Budget your time accordingly

My advice: don't try to see the whole country at once. The US is really like many countries without a border, both culturally and scenically. Trying to see both NY and Las Vegas, for example, will be a big mess and you won't feel like you got a sense of either place.

If nature is a priority, though, you really can't do much better as a starting point than Vegas. You could do a nice loop of Vegas->Grand Canyon->Bryce Canyon->Zion National Park-Vegas again. For a second part, you could go down to LA and up the California coast (take Rte 1 to San Fran, and take your time about it). That will fill up your three weeks on a classic American-Style road trip without feeling like you're rushed.

Isn't Plum Tree Island closed to the general public? As a former bombing range, unexploded munitions are still being found.

Well, I don't hate America. I hate its imperialistic policies. Having said that, a lot of my views towards the WoT have changed. I have lost friends and colleagues to terrorism recently. Even though I now support USA drone strikes in our country, I don't understand why America funds what it fights. Let's leave that for P&N.

I'll be visiting Las Vegas and NJ for certain. The rest is all open. The $6000 includes travel, food and accommodation within the US. I have a house and a car while I am in NJ (1.5 hr south of NYC) so that will cut down on expenses while there big time.

What I was thinking was spending 7 days (+- 3-4 days) on the East Coast (home) and then fly to SF. From there I could drive to SF and then on to Yellowstone/GC and spend 3-4 days on the road. Finally 3 nights in Vegas and then fly back to NYC where I have some work for 3-4 days.

How expensive are motels in California? What sort of car rentals prices should I expect?

Also we are both young (25), and married last year. Life has been busy and we've never had a proper honeymoon since.

Getting to Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon from San Fran is much too long to reasonably do in a couple weeks while still feeling like you got to see anything. Driving those three is about the same distance as going from Islamabad to Karachi.

If you want to go to SF, go see Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Napa Valley, and Big Sur. That will be a much more rewarding experience altogether.

From a West Coast perspective:

Rent a car from Vegas and visit - Bryce, Zion & The Grand Canyon.

Zion - hike a mile - 2 miles up the Virgin River and check out the narrows. Water 7 shade will keep you relatively cool. If you have the stamina hike Angels Landing - early morning hike, its hit.

Head to Bryce - 2hr drive. Hike the main trail - its about 4-miles and takes you through the Hoodoos, canyon & Wall St.

Head back to Vegas & spend the night - check out Fremont St and walk the strip and check out the Casinos.

From Vegas - head to LA and drive up the PCH (Hwy 1 & 101) and head North to San Francisco. Spend 2-days in SF eating great food and enjoying one of Americas top 5 Cities. Chicago, SF, NYC, Boston & ________. Check out the Redwoods in Muir Woods.

This is the best advice if Vegas will be one of the places OP is heading. I'd take a look at the parks listed above and see which ones interest you the most, as you won't have time to see them all. I'm partial to Zion, Arches, and Canyonlands, personally.

As others have noted, the U.S. is massive so you'd be best served finding on a small number of places that sound appealing and spending time in those places. Last year, I spent two weeks on the coast of Southern France, a much smaller geographic area than NJ to Nevada and felt like I barely scratched the surface of things to see and do there.
