Help with wireless networking please

I recently got Comcast Cable and I currently have my work laptop and my desktop sharing the connection using all wireless gear from Dlink on 802.11g.

I can't get the two to share files though....

My work laptop is on a domain at work, and I can't run the windows network wizard. As you can tell, I'm a total newb and would like to be able to swap files between machines.

Any help?!?!

Both machines run WinXP Pro

Thanks!

"Here's a very vague and generic description of my two machines. I won't tell you what I've tried so far or how I am trying to go about sharing files. I won't elabroate on "I can't get the two to share files though....", I pretty much just want you to guess everything and solve my problems for me. Please?"

May get flamed for that but GD I am tired of people expecting miracles and giving nothing to work with. Schweeew. Venting over. You may now flame me.

I could flame if I want, but it's not worth my time, and like your post, it's not going to help me get my answers any faster - NOW IS IT!!!

That said, if you reread above, I have no F$#^ing clue what I'm doing.

In the past, all I've done is put the two computers on the same workgroup and voila, I can share files by sharing individiual folders on each computer. Now, because my laptop is on a domain at work, when I bring it home, I can't get it on the same workgroup as my home computer and I can't add my home computer to the domain.

So the question remains, how do I get them to share files?!?!

The laptop is a IBM Thinkpad A30 - the Desktop is a mish mash of parts (XP1800, etc)

If someone would help me out, that would be great...I didn't know I was asking for so much, especially when every other post I've ever made on this board has been well received and members have been extremely helpful.

Thanks.

WinXP let you define two connections option and you can switch between them.

Or you can use this software to switch, to define and switch.

Link to: NetSwitcher

However if your work IT people installed it in a propriety way that does not let you change you have to talk to them.

"So the question remains, how do I get them to share files?!?!"

Actually that wasn't the question. There wasn't a question other than "Any help" You didn't give enough information for anyone to really help you.

The comment was: "I can't get the two to share files though...."

Hey maybe to you that is a question. To me, the outright inference was you have tried to share files and failed. You can do local sharing without worrying about netswitcher or other workgroup/domain logon switching software. It is a good tool, useful as hell and a good suggestion by Jack. Not a must though. Anyway, your post lacked the instruments to help from my perspective and your rebuttal wasn't that much better. To me anyway.

Use NTFS partitions, share your files, volumes or folders, set the permission properly (using a user account that has rights on the remote machine) and either browse to or search for the remote node. Search is going to work better than Network Places, or even the UNC path from the run dialogue box. Search by computer name or IP if that doesn't work. A local policy from a logon script or something may be jamming you up. To solve that you may need to talk to your LAN admin. Good luck.

Oh, I wasn't talking about you flaming me BTW.

you probably dont have admin rights on the laptop so try this. on your home machine create a user with the same name and password as you logon to your laptop with. then create the shares and give that user name permissions. from the laptop, browse the network and you should be able to find your other machine and the shares.

Ok, two things have become obvious here....

a) ktwebb - your answer flew way over my head - I guess you couldn't read between the lines for the question there, and my lack of info isn't helping any...not a flame, just an observation

b) now I have a better idea of the kinds of info I need to provide!!

OK, I have admin privelages on both computers....let me clarify. I work for a company of around 8 people....I recently formatted and reinstalled all software on my own machine, so as far as having privelages, I've got them.

When I browse the entire network on the laptop (the one on the domain) all I see is my office network - I can't see the workgroup that my home computer is on.

If I understand the network switcher prog, I could come home and switch from being behind my domain when I'm at work to being on the same workgroup as my home computer?

Again, sorry that I'm thick as a brick on this one, but networking isn't my thing...

Thanks for the help

Don't use Network Places or try to browse for the remote PC. Use the search function, searching for computer instead of files or directories. Search by IP. You can try computer name but name resolution is flaky in windows anyway, without the added confusion of a mixed workgroup/domain model LAN. If your using the proper user account, have permissions setup completely, and shared something, you shouldn't have any problems. If that doesn't work then explain your problems explicitly when posting back.

Assuming that Laptop his connecting to the Router and you can surf the Internet.

You have two choices.

1. Get up-hazard trial and error suggestions until with the Help of the Mighty One you will get lucky, or Not.

2. Do some reading and learn what to do.

Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Settings, and Sharing.
