I just aquired a dell 1.6ghz p4, figured i would use it for divx playback. It had 256meg of memory. I added a 80 and 160 gig hard drive. Not 1 minute into the playback the audio and video are out of synch. I added another 512meg of ram but it was no help. The cpu is pegging out at 100% usage. Running xp pro with sp2, and now 768 meg of memory. Any suggestions.

Most of these files I have played back on lesser computers ie 1 gig duron, and even a 667mhz p3

You sure it's not the original files? It's actually quite hard to make the audio and video go out of sync unless it was encoded that way, which is a common problem with Divx.

Assuming your files are okay then I'd say you have a codec conflict. NEVER install one of those codec mega-packs. It causes major problems when you have more than one codec trying to decode the same video.

The added problem is that once installed it's sometimes difficult to uninstall these codecs.

Hope this helps...

I discuss how to see what codecs you have, which ones are being used for a particular video, how to uninstall individual codecs that don't have an uninstaller here: http://soldcentralfl.com/flyingpenguin/penguin_blog.shtml#divx-fix

I use only FFDshow and no other codecs. It handles everything just fine. I use the 20041012 alpha version (that is the latest official version from the author - all others are hacks and you use at your own risk). I do not install seperate Divx and XVid codecs.

The files on the big drive were copied from my main rig, jus installed the drive there copied the files and moved it over as a data drive in the dell. Even played some of the files while the drive was still in the main rig, and they played fine. The only codec I installed was divx 5.21, windows was a fresh install.

You got me thinking, I actually installed 2 divx codec, 5.06 or something and 5.12, would that do it?

Uninstalled the divx codecs and install ffdshow, the movies are watchable, but cpu still pegged at 100% anything I can turn off to free up headroom.
