Ok so I've never built a system before and this is my first time.
I just got in my E6600 and my ASRock 775Dual-VSTA. I know the motherboard sucks but I'm just using it until the nForce boards come out.

So I read the instructions and lowered the CPU vertically down onto the socket. I put the lid over and started to press down on that lever and I heard this crinkling/crunching sound. I got worried and stopped and looked at my CPU and saw that there were a whole bunch of little indentations in it.

So when you lock the CPU into place is it supposed to pop holes in the CPU?
Also, I noticed that some of them weren't lined up in the middle. Is that ok?

Please help. It's urgent and I'm freaking out.

Does anybody know what I'm talking about?
The E6600 has 775 gold circles on it but I always thought they were holes. Does pressing the CPU and locking it into the mother board create these holes?

No..... The socket pins in the mobo just make contact with the processor.

Do any of the pins in the socket look bent? Take a flashlight and check....

Thank you so much. So I've been working on that and then I realize that I installed the mounting bars the for Scythe Ninja backwards.
Does anyone know if I should installed the HSF first and then put the motherboard in the case or the other way around?

Sorry I couldn't resist. Everybody experiences that at their first try. No need to worry.

Can you tell me why my Scythe Ninja won't lock in?
It seems that the clip that hooks on to the retention bracked is way to short to reach.

Put the socket cover (that comes with the board) in its place and practice mounting it. Clip mounting mechanism can often feel very tight, but that's the way it is. Also I'd use slightly more TIM for clip mounting compared with screw mounting.

This is a nightmare. I have TIM all over the CPU and HSF now and I have taken off and put on those damn mounting brackets a millions times. Not only is it a pain in the a$$ but I have put them on every different way and still no luck. I mean it doesn't even look close to lacking on. Anyone have any pictures or suggestions?
I went to the Scythe site but the instructions are the same I have here (and they suck).

Is the Scythe Ninja mounting kit universal? Or is it that it may not be compatible with my ASSRock 775Dual-VSTA?

Yeah, I got it!!! And it only took my ENTIRE BODY WEIGHT!!!

I seriously had to put as much pressure as I could from my chest onto the top of the Ninja. Then I used both hands to pull up 2 hooks at a time.

BTW, there is absolutely no way I can get that off now unless I unscrew it from the bottom. Hope that I used enough TIM!

Nice I think I just ran into another problem. I believe my mobo has a 20 pin ATX power connection where my PSU (Antec TruPower II 550W) has a 24 pin ATX connector. Is there someway I can get an adapter?

LOL, good job. Your experience reminds me of my first build, back in 94' when I was 15 upgrading my POS 386 to a 486 DX4-100. Good times.

I think just about everything that could go wrong today did. And I have a feeling it will only get worse.

Whenever you get worried, take a break. A first build is a very stressful thing. I remember building my first rig. I made about a new post every 30 seconds to make sure everything was working right.
Just take your time, and learn from this. It gets easier and easier the more you do it.

Check the 24 pin connector and see if 4 are removable. On many ps, the connector works with either 20 or 24 pin.

Well...I have to say that lady luck finally caught up with me. After rereading the Antec TruePower 2.0 manual I discovered that the 24 pin power connector can be split into a 20 and a 4 pin. Booyah!!! I actually might get this thing to run sometime before Kentsfield comes out.

Ha! I was just checking that as you were posting. Thanks man.

Thanks JoeFahey. It's definitely true as I'm already noticed that I'm not as jittery and my hands aren't shaking as much. It's just the excitement of building my first computer plus getting my hands on an E6600.

This is the golden age of computers and it's great!
