i just tried to jump the psu with a paper clip in 14 and 15 then turnign the pwoer supply on to see if the fan spins

nothing happens

if the fans do not spin up and then stop does that mean its a dead psu?

You were inside the machine, so first thing to do is carefully check all the molex connectors, the 20/24-pin connector to the motherboard, and 4-pin motherboard connector (if any), and any modular PSU connectors. Just make sure you didn't knock something loose. If it still won't boot, then tell us what PSU you have and what peripherals. Is it possible the additional/new fans draw too much power for the PSU?

psu is a enermax wisper II 460w
part number eg465p-ve fma(24)

when i tested it a second ago i removed everthing except the 24 pin and the extra 4 pin and still nothing

the fans wont turn no matter how i try to pwer it up, the lan port lights and diagnostic lights wont com on, and they should be on even with the computer turned off

im thinking psu is dead but i dont want rma until i was able to test it with my multi meter

how can i do that?

i have one sata drive, one video card, a cd burnder, a dvd rom, two case fans, a sound card and a floppy nothing is overclocked

i has been working perfectly until i installed the new fans, which i never got to try out cause it wouldnt start up

Hope you didn't zap anything.

Did you make sure to ground yourself before touching the insides of your computer?

i used my grounding strap yeh

is there a way to test a psu if its taken out of the case and pluged into the wall with nothing attached to its connectors?

like a way to test if juice is flowing so i can rule out my mobo and validate that it is indeed the psu

so i plugged the psu into another computer and it wouldn't start it up

so its getting RMA'ed back to new egg tomorrow, i hope they have a replacement

only two months of minimal usage and that sucker went defective on me just for swapping out a pair of case fans

I'm not sure, but as far as I am aware, a grounding strap is for handling static-sensitive components when they are not plugged in. I think using it while touching live components would be extraordinarily bad as it would make absolutely sure you provide a path for the electricity...

Can anyone confirm this?

Did you check the power switch on the back of the PSU?

Stupid question I know, but some people have actually forgotten about that little important switch back there.

the thing is that i unpluged everything on the back so i could take it out and lay it on its side

so it was not connected to any power source

then i waited afew minutes to let things dissipate

the case is a enlight mid tower so its got good access and such

if somthing got zapped it was such a slight charge that it tiped the defective psu over th edge

yeh i played with the switch in the back as well

the thing is that no matter what juice would not flow through the psu to anything

my guess is that it was defective to begin with and in pwering it down and placing two new case fans caused it to give up

maybe it was a bad cap or somthing i dont know, seems to me that a psu like this one should be a little more durrable

cause i basicaly put the machine together in october and never opened the case until yesterday

no burn marks were seen anywhere, and i use a ups to prevent surges to the machine

SeaSonic S12-430 a good choice?

my system is rather mild so it might be overkill

BIOSTAR TFORCE 550 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 550 MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
Patriot 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model PDC22G5300LLK
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) ST3250620AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+(65W) Windsor 2.0GHz Socket AM2 Processor Model ADO3800CUBOX
MSI NX7600GT-VT2D256EHD GeForce 7600GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card

1 floppy
1 cd rw
1 dvd rom
creative audigy platinum ex
2 case fans
enlight mid tower

PSU that died, and is discontinued is:
ENERMAX Whisper II EG465P-VE FMA(24) ATX12V 460W Power Supply

mild overclock at the most i want to up the cpu speed to 2.2 from its stock speed of 2.0

Wearing a grounding strap while poking around inside a 'live' system... good idea. You can still deliver a nasty static charge to a system while it is running (although it should be somewhat more resistant to this, since it is in theory grounded through the PSU). Even if you do take a shock from something -- you'd rather have the electricity going through the grounding strap than your body.

Wearing a grounding strap while, say, poking around inside a 'live' PSU, or sticking a fork in your toaster... maybe not such a great idea.

thats why i unplug all the cables from the back of my machine when i open it up
i also let it sit for a few minutes so that it could drain of any charges

not sure, but if there was a static zap i think i would have felt it, and if it was so minor of a zap that i couldn't have felt it, then the psu is a pos imo

i already ordered the seasonic, it should be plenty i think
