My motherboard is suppose to be here tomorrow. I have read so many forums where people are saying to install an older CPU first just to update the bios. I know that you guys just installed E8400's on P5K series boards. Can I just put my E8400 directly on my P5K deluxe and then upgrade the bios from there, or do I have to install an older CPU first and upgrade the bios. Also, I am going to try the stock fan first to see how it performs, and if it doesn't work sufficiently, I will try something else. The stock heatsink comes with some stuff on the bottom. I am assuming it is a heat transfer substance, but it looks more like a clay. I have read that the aftermarket gel works better, but is the stock stuff ok for now. Also, isn't most of the heat transfer paste the same. I have some paste that I have to install on control modules for cars. Please give me your opinions.

Thank You,

Steve

To be exact, I have a P5E-VM HDMI, not a P5K. But I figure the internals are similar because I saw somewhere in Everest that it read 'P5K HDMI'. (maybe because of ICH9R?)

The board came with BIOS 0301 (dated Nov 2007) and it booted fine with my E8400. I didn't see any harm but I flashed to the latest BIOS (0405, dated Jan 2008). I think you'll be just fine but don't blame me if something goes wrong.

E8400 runs cool, but I should mention that I didn't use E8400's stock cooler for overclocking.. The cooler I'm using came with either an E6600, E2140, E2160 or Celeron 331. (can't remember which is which because they all look the same!) In any case, I don't see a reason to take the stock TIM off of the bottom of heat sink until you see the result. You can always re-apply afterwards - it's very easy to deal with the stock heat sink because of its small foot print. What I see with my E8400 is a higher idle temp than my E6600 (38~42C vs 29~32C), but way smaller delta. One of the core only rises ~10C under full load and the other ~15C.

all those clay type substances are called thermal grease, thermal paste, or thermal compound. More than likely if your motherboard doesn't have the latest bios you will need to flash update it so that it's compatible with the e8400. One way to flash it is to boot up with an older chip in the board that it can already recognize. I wouldn't use the auto paste for the cpu to heatsink connection. I would use a thermal paste that is specifically made for that application, the most famous being Artic Silver 5.

Thermal compound come with manufacture heatsink are craps and not all the thermal compound are the same. Some are higher quality then others, as of right now, AS5 or Arctic Cooling MX-2 are the best. Also, I have a P5k Deluxe with E8400 and it works fine with my old bios 603 (newest 705, offically support E8400) . I am not sure if it will work for older bios.

P5K Dlx should post, and install without an issue if you bought the MoBo at a high volume E-Tailer.... if you bought it at Mom and Pop computer shop it then might be a little different.
The Major E-tailers move so much inventory that they usually have the latest BIOS or close.

yeah clean that funky grey crap off, and yes the other thermal transfer product should be ok. the most that I have seen on the stock cooler is 3.6.. if you want over 4.0 you need something very good that has a fair amount of thermal mass, as the surface area of the die has shrunk and you don't want hot spots, and the more mass the less heat saturation.

I bought it from newegg. Also, I have been told to only install 1 chip in one memory slot until I get windows vista installed. Why is that?

Alot of folks ran into an issue with 4 Gigs of Memory conflicting with Vista, and preventing Installation.

By just putting in one stick you bypass the issue. there is a hotfix... but the easy fix is just pulling the stick... then put in after Vista is in.

You should have no issue ... The Egg does so damn much volume.
