TUCSON, Arizona (AP) -- A judge sentenced a woman to nearly the maximum prison term for negligent homicide after hearing a recorded jail conversation in which she made light of the bicyclist she killed.

Melissa Arrington, 27, was convicted two months ago of negligent homicide and two counts of aggravated DUI in connection with the December 2006 death of Paul L'Ecuyer.

She could have gotten as few as four years behind bars, but Superior Court Judge Michael Cruikshank sentenced her Tuesday to 10½ years -- one year shy of the maximum.

Cruikshank said he found a telephone conversation between Arrington and an unknown male friend, a week after L'Ecuyer was killed, to be "breathtaking in its inhumanity."

During the conversation, the man told Arrington that an acquaintance believed she should get a medal and a parade because she had "taken out" a "tree hugger, a bicyclist, a Frenchman and a gay guy all in one shot."

Arrington laughed. When the man said he knew it was a terrible thing to say, she responded, "No, it's not."

Assistant Public Defender Michael Rosenbluth told the judge his client has never been "cold, callous or flippant" about L'Ecuyer's death and has always felt remorseful.

Arrington said words couldn't express how she feels, and that once she's out of prison, she hopes to share her story with Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

L'Ecuyer, 45, was riding his bike the night of December 1, 2006 when Arrington swerved off the road, hit him and then continued for 800 feet before stopping, according to Deputy Pima County Attorney Jonathan Mosher.

Arrington's blood-alcohol content was .156 percent, nearly double Arizona's .08 legal limit. She had been driving on a suspended license for a prior DUI

hahahah so if you run over and kill someone don't joke about killing him. it tends to really piss off the judge!

So, the person she was talking to made light of the situation, probably to cheer up the woman who was a complete idiot, and she gets the max term. Makes sense.

I think she should get the max sentence in the first place and not some watered down version, but it seems like this phone call was just used as an excuse to make it the max.

; after which she laughs out loud. Then when the man on the phone admits it's really a bad thing to say, she responds: No, it's not.

, and she gets the max term. Makes sense.

Fixed that for ya.

she was claiming to be remorsful and never was cold or flippant about it. the tape of the call proved otherwise.

yes the caller joked and she laughed with him. that is not the actions of someone who is remorsful.

but she should have gotten nailed anyway considering she was driving on a suspended license for a dui when she killed him.

What a god damned retard. Why couldn't she have been weeded out of the gene pool, instead of the victim? Drunk drivers living through their episodes of failed cognitive ability is a fucking Darwinian paradox, I tell you.

Wow, she's a pretty stupid, arrogant bitch. I mean, it's one thing if the bicyclist swerved in front of her - the "no it's not" comment would still be horrible, but it wouldn't have been completely her fault. But considering she was drunk and swerved into him, that's pretty damn bad.

Have fun with the prison dykes!

I'm trying to figure out why her initial "possible" sentence was only 4 years. Even the 10.5yrs isn't right. She committed murder, it is indesputible, 25yrs to life should be the sentence.

Same goes for people who run from the cops and slam into innocent bystanders. Attempted murder 20yrs to life.

She would have been ok if she didn't add in the gay part probably

Still people like her need this kind of reality check. i could see if she was still out of prison and there was some debate that the pedestrian may have been at fault...but when you are in jail and know it was your fault then you'd best really be sorry about it.

 Good riddance. What a piece of shit.

I wouldn't mind a few minutes alone with the BF and a pair of brass knuckles either.

10 years is a joke. She'll probably get out after half of that with 'good behavior'. :|

I'm not trying to sound callous about this but let's be honest here, behind close doors, you and a bunch of your buddies often joke about running over those annoying cyclists who think they own the road GTA style. Obviously, when you've actually done it when you're drunk no less is a different story but don't tell me you guys haven't at least thought of it before. This women is just retarded and deserves her 11.5 year sentence for stupidity alone, I'd tack on another ten for drunk driving and manslaughter charges.

It's not murder if there's no intent.

Semantics. Bottom line. The dumb bitch got drunk, got in a car and as a result, someone is dead. She knew that driving while drunk is not only illegal, but stupid (anyone claiming otherwise lives under a rock or is an idiot)

Joking about a hypothetical event that you would NEVER do, and would feel very bad about if it actually happened, is VERY different from joking about a terrible crime which you have indeed committed.

If you can't see the difference, I pity you. It's the same reason that you don't tell dead-baby jokes in front of the infant ICU.

Obviously, there is a difference and i said there is a difference. My point is the woman's friend was probably saying it to cheer her up a bit and she was just plain stupid and now she's paying the price. Just because you joke about it doesn't mean you're actually going to do it. If you do, you've got some serious problems.

I agree she deserves some serious jail time (driving on suspended license from prior DUI?) but that kind of comment is something I could easily make with my friends. If that had happened to me, I'm sure I would still be remorseful, and yet I can totally see a conversation like that taking place. We make cracks like that every 5 minutes.

Guess we have a harder sense of humor.
