Chapter Two :

“It can be said that even a regime as brutal as the SSSU (Supreme Soviet Solar Union) had its own sense of ethics and rules. Rules with transgressions grave enough to cause the Soviet Politburo in AD 2345 to call for a conference amongst the four pillars of the state: the Politburo, the Soviet Congress, the glorious Soviet Naval Armada and the last but not the least, the Architect of the state.

It was to be the last meeting of the quadruple ever, having happened just a fortnight before the cataclysm that would destroy their realm. None had any reason to suspect anything as the ‘conference’ went on as it usually goes. None knew that a fortnight from now, most of them would be dead or dying. None except the Architect of course, for it was him who unleashed that darkness on us all….”

A Count of the Fallen, excerpts from the journals of Perth Dost.

Architect Sildron Heydrich was a remarkable man with an even more remarkable personality. He earned enemies in direct proportion to the length of his life so far, all the hundred and thirty standard solar cycles of it. A powerful, but unpleasant man and very contented for that fact, Heydrich believed his fierce reputation saved him from suffering the company of those he called ‘insufferable fools’ , a term stretched so broad by his definition, it should include everyone but him!

He had other quirks too, chiefly a drive to advance mankind scientifically in an exponential manner. It’s what his father had done as the Architect of the state and this is what he in his father’s footsteps will continue to do so for the simians around him whether they like it or not, Oh yes, the simians he was ashamed to call his fellow species. Needless to say, Heydrich had an ego bloated enough to collapse upon itself.

So keeping these endearing traits in mind while it would be enough to say anyone who was anyone by virtue of birth, rank or privilege hated Heydrich, it also must be said that it was all entirely Heydrich’s fault. The Architect just wouldn’t have preferred things in another way!
But despite these faults, however one thing Heydrich wasn’t was a fool. Oh no, the Architect had foreseen his destiny of what’s left of his life and beyond mere physical death.

He had seen the apex of his continuum, the memory chain of descendants and ancestors

Heydrich prided himself as the first man to know what lay beyond death as a biological being and could prove a scientific afterlife to anyone if he bothered. He knew every constraint that factored in resonating power through the state as his father had sculpted it. He understood the hate for him actually was a stabilizing factor as the checks and balances neutralized the overwhelming power of the Armada and the politburo.

The Soviet state was a magnificent circus of which he played the ringmaster in parts and yet in some the beast. He knew while everyone hated him in private, they were forced to kowtow to him as the Architect of the state. They had to; he was the perfect balance to the quadruple point of power held over the state. It was all planned and in light of the achievements of him, his family and what he was going to do further on, one would no doubt agree that he was deserving of the status he accorded himself.

Exactly the point he’ll use to bludgeon his opposition with everytime he was challenged, exactly the only point he’ll ever need to hammer sense into the fools squirming like worms ahead of him at the meet.

The procession bearing Heydrich made its way through the grand corridors of the Palace of Commissar’s Guard, the focal point of Soviet power located in the sea of Archimedes on the militarized Earth moon. Fleets of Soviet craft flew overhead, their lights sparkling through the transparent ceramic that made up the roof of the space fortress’s entrance.

The quadruple met thrice every year, officially to set the course for the future, unofficially to blame each other for the mess they had created, all except Heydrich of course, after all he was a class of his own.

Heydrich’s suspension cart followed the vanguard closely behind, the jack booted black guards walking in stiff strides, guiding the way for their master’s cart which vaguely resembled an upright coffin holding a glass globe supporting the Architect’s head. This was how he could live after nearly one and half centuries of life and in essence, the entire spectacle was as morose as a funeral.

Considering it was Heydrich at the center of the show, everyone one else wished how much it was indeed so!

Heydrich knew this for a fact and rejoiced even more in his malevolence.

The insufferable fools!

Did they really think their hesitation for progress would hold him back?

Of course not!

Heydrich’s cart eased itself into the Architect’s podium at the fourth apogee of the great hall. At the other three were the politburo, the naval observers and of course the speaker of the fifty third Soviet Congress.

Tridimensional projections magnified just right to focus on the participants were imaged across the ceiling of the great hall. Seven hundred men and women waited impatiently for the proceedings to commence.

The conference began almost immediately and it was the Soviet Congress’s speaker who spoke first, since after all the Congress was the first pillar of the state.

“At times, even the great falter, so on this day, we have been summoned to this meet by an emergency resolution passed by the politburo requiring authorization by us, a resolution making claims of excessive…” The speaker fumbled for the correct word. “…enthusiasm on the Architect’s part.”

Heydrich waited for the speaker to continue. He wouldn’t risk a confrontation with the Congress yet, oh no he would rather fight with the politburo that drafted the damned resolution in the first place.

The speaker continued to speak, turning towards the Architect, he said “You, Sildron Heydrich are the Architect of the state. You, yourself in your position bear responsibility for the moral sanctimony of the state. All we ask you is that you remember that responsibility.”

Another speech, another moment of groveling to Heydrich. General Secretary Anatoly Korenshkin just hated the sign of the Congress capitulating to the Architect. He knew they had to; he was the perfect balance to their own (politburo’s) power.

Korenshkin rose from his seat and signaled the speaker to stop. Perhaps it was a coincidence that he found courage just at the occasion of the very last meeting of the quadruple, perhaps it was the ghost of history that whispered into him the words that will address Heydrich.

“Heydrich, this time your wings have been clipped, admit that…”

A shocked silence reverberated through the great hall, a deafening moment that penetrated the prevailing personalities assembled their alike, regardless of status.

Korenshkin continued on “That’s right, Heydrich, from now you will have to behave. Your days of coercing us using the Congress and them using us are over. We had it with your tricks long enough."

The General Secretary waited for a moment for the message to sink in, a fatal flaw as he would find out. The Architect wassmiled inwardly, because this was just the turn of events he expected.

The insufferable fools!

They had rejected his offer of progress, his last stand of reconciliation with the species he once identified with. Oh no, the fools have bought it upon themselves, the judgment he swore on them!

He had offered them one last chance of stopping what he planned ahead, one last chance of averting the Cataclysm ahead of their timeline! A timeline he hid so successfully from the prescient already amongst the Congress.

But both the Congress and the Politburo had rejected his offer!
His conscience was clean now, he had to do what he had to.

He could do what he wanted to do.

Korenshkin kept continuing “…this is the last time you embarrassed the politburo by making us explain to the Congress another of your inane schemes for progressing mankind…”

Heydrich spoke for the first time, his guttural voice echoed through the chamber. “Inane schemes that bought this glorious state this far!”

Korenshkin shouted. “Insane schemes like why you planned to bastardize all of the state with your brilliant genetic standardization plan. Yes, that’s the word we used officially even for the archives, that’s what I use now in the august presence of the congress…”

Heydrich almost let a thin grin crack his hard face. Yes, this time he had gone too far. That much he admitted even for himself. He had planned it so, after all he had wanted them to fail the test he devised himself, the test of rejecting his offer. Yet a fortnight from now, it would not matter anymore.

Nothing would matter anymore!

Heydrich thundered back, the voice transcriber amplifying his guttural voice. “Use what you want. Korenshkin, you don’t want progress anymore. Why would you? After all, everything I have given has contented you already, you, the Congress and ah yes, even the people!”

The words were spat bitterly from his mouth, there was no amount to the disgust in the Architect’s voice, disgust at the sight of the worms around him, worms that refused to progress anymore.

Korenshkin replied back “Heydrich, the fact is that we fear your creations far less than their consequences. Your father learnt from his mistakes. Your father understood that forcing men to improve themselves against their own will may bring us progress, yet it would buy none of us here immunity. Yes, immunity from the crimes we took to stay in power....”

Nervous voices erupted from the Congress, several of the audience shuffled themselves, few even called for explanations from the government for the statement from the General Secretary admitting to genocide.

Korenshkin stared speechless at the furor he caused by unwittingly opening secrets in public, it was clear he fell into the Architect’s trap!

Heydrich couldn’t resist being delighted at the turn of the events, Koprenshkin was exactly proceeding on the timeline he wanted him to do so.

Heydrich almost laughed again “Is that all? Is that what you fear? Retribution for your crimes? If we stand trial for our crimes, I shall hang higher than any of you here. I'm the Architect of the state. The crimes you would be charged for would count twice against me. I taught you how to be brutal....”

Uproar erupted throughout the hall, Several Soviet commissars (members of the congress) walked out of their seats raising slogans, both against the politburo and this time against Heydrich. It soon appeared that the government may be dissolved.

All because of the Architect’s gameplan! Korenshkin struggled to regain control “That is why I advise you to fear the consequences of your own actions. Your creations have caused us enough trouble already. Neither of us would have problems if only you could control....”

Heydrich pretended to flare up. “Control! I taught you that! Korenschkin. No no, even your brutality was mediocre. I taught you how to control the peasants! I made you give them drugs that destroyed the mind of an entire generation and made them meek. What will my punishment be? Do I care for it? No realize this, my inventions would continue, against your wishes or that of the Congress!”

Now the Congress was in the state of a true pandemonium, neither caring for the Architect nor for the Politburo, only for itself. It was apparent the system that had in place for the past three and half centuries had fallen apart in a few short moments, it was now at its weakest point.

Heydrich didn’t care a bit as he gestured towards the observers from the Navy and accused everyone. “...it wasn't your deliberations or resolutions which made our state the supreme power. No, it was the effort of my family and the fortune of the wise men listening to them. Men I see no longer, except....”

His gloved palm wriggled at the Navy men. They flushed with pleasure. No, no, he was their hero. He gave them clever toys to play with and really big ones too!
Korenschkin tried to speak, but his words got lost over Heydrich's shouts and the noise of the Congress desperately reorganizing itself over the latest developments. The Architect was red all over, he was still accusing the politburo.

“.....so as you can see, gentlemen! Where is that fire within you to conquer all? That fire that burnt within you as my grandfather arbitrated that treaty sending Khrushchev to the gallows, Comrade Beria to the secretaryship and himself as the Architect of the state? Where is that fire? It's been lost, in that desire to hold on to power, in your pitiful fear of punishment. I'm the Architect. It is my discretion to decide how to lead men to a higher level as we always have and I order you to assist me with the same! “

The General Secretary gave in, a unbroken line of defeat when confronted with Heydrich the third. “Fine, Heydrich. Have it you way. Your inventions are fine. But bring them to us before you take it to the Congress. However your proposals for implementing them across the system is out of question. But humor yourself to your heart content. Just don't try fitting your madness to the rest of the state....”

Heydrich nodded his head “Impossible, that's a comprise I cannot accept. My family heralded the path for mankind and I shall continue in their ways. You cannot hope to maintain control this way. The population shall find a way to resist, inspite your brutality, inspite my drugs! And I rejoice for that fact. A wise man can hold order, despite the direst of circumstances, this shall not last long. Mark my words!”

Korenschkin barked back in turn. He was sick of it all. “Do what you have to do! But remember! Co-operate! Do that and this shall all end well for all of us. You can then retire to a great dacha you choose by your own will. Your fate shall be no less greater than that of your fathers. Enough!”

Heydrich shook his head again. “No, this meeting serves no more purpose. It is clear you shall remain paralyzed by your fear and I will be left banging my head on a wall. You cannot hope to bribe me. No, Gentlemen! Humanity shall progress whether you like it or not....”

Saying so, Heydrich got up and walked out of the room.

He left chaos in his wake. The nautical observers got up and left the room impressed. Impressed at the Architect's histrionics.

The general secretary himself was left with a headache. A headache, he can only hope to cure himself with a binge drinking session with his minions.

A tradition as old as the politburo itself!

Heydrich didn't care a bit about anything as he walked towards his ship. An impressive hulk of metal, unbeatable by any other ship in the Soviet's fleet. The ship was the privilege afforded to him as the Architect and one he built himself. Inside were his own fanatical guards awaiting to guard and protect him as they have been indoctrinated to do so.

The insufferable fools!

Did they think that their opposition to his efforts to make humanity progress will stop him?

Of course not!

Humanity will progress one way or another!

He would force them to. As always his father has done so.

He hated mankind. Yet he didn't want to kill them all. Oh no, doing that would negate any meaning in his forefathers struggle for advancing man. So he would settle for the second best.

Improve them at the worst possible cost!

A great war! The only way through which humanity has progressed itself. A gigantic war, mankind must fight and achieve a higher level!

A war to end all wars. That's what he will give them, forcing them to progress themselves. That's what he would so.

As usual, Heydrich rejoiced in his own malevolence. He rejoiced as he continued spinning the web he had long begun to spun. The web to bring about a greater human destiny.

No, no, the insufferable fools bought it upon themselves!

His mind calculated the causalities expected from his plans.

Yes, the politburo would be swept away! So would be the Soviet Congress!

The Navy would last sometime. He was sure of their merit.

Several billion humans dead of course. But did he care?
Of course, not!

It was the price of progress!

An acceptable one in his eyes!

So even as Sildron Tristan Eugen Heydrich retreated back to his chambers, he plotted the destruction of everyone and everything around him. He had it all figured it out. He would force humanity to progress or exterminate them trying!

in my opinion the content does not warrant the tone or the use of some of the diction. do not try so hard to impress, keep the pace even and soften the characters a bit..you do not have to make them likable, but being able to relate to them is necessary.

Entertaining a bit, a few wrong words. Bought was used a couple places that brought should have been, and inane instead of insane at least 1 place.
