<< In 2001 here in canada they started collecting a tax on cd-r and cd-rw disks, I think it 25 cents per. That why cd-r's nearly doubled in price in 2001 and recording companies are presently collecting royalties from these blank media.face legal opposition to it. >>

You're only partially right. What you said only applies to the specially marked
"audio CD-R" discs. In fact, "regular" CD-R prices in Canada have been on a
steady decline for the past two years. Take for example "regular" Pioneer 650MB
CDR discs that are $1 and compare the price to the same 650MB "audio" CDR
which is nearly $3. In 1999 the "regular" one would have been the one that
cost $3.

>CD-R prices in Canada have been on a steady decline for the past two years.

What ??? Just before this was implemented I purchased a 100 blank 16x cd-r gigasotrage spindle at futureshop for $29, I went there two day ago and purchased the same brand same speed cd-r's for someone else and a 50 spindle cost $39, I just now went to futureshop.ca store and they are selling a pack of 25 for $24.99. I'm sure I still have the receipts at home to prove this.

>Canada have been on a steady decline for the past two years.

I agree that over a long period of time they have been on the decline from the $3/per as you mention but they have nearly doubled in price in the past year because of this 'fee'

Are the record companies going to advertise that these cd's will not be available on all cd players? I would like to see "WARNING, this cd may not play on your cd player, buy at your own risk" We'll see how that effects cd sales.

The copy-protection technology will also render the disc unplayable on Macintosh computers, DVD players and game consoles, such as Sony's PlayStation 2. It might not even play in some CD players.

Clearly an idiot must have dreamed up this idea. If this goes ahead it will absolutely hammer their sales.

I can just see it now when people bring back the CD to the music store for a refund because it doesn't work on their players, and if it's RIP proof then they'll have to take it back because no one is 'apparently' able to make a copy. I take it that it won't be a best seller.

Give me a break! This copy protection scheme is soooo weak I b!tch slapped it and already ripped "The Fast And The Furious" (I bought it just to see if I could break the code)! I BUY 99.999% of my music and I'll be damned if these b!tches (UMC) are going to tell me how I listen to what I've already paid TOO MUCH for. I've got a good mind to throw these songs on Morpheus and let UMC see them being shared.

I'll give you a hint:

<< Just get yourself a DVD drive >>

That isn't the work around for this scheme.

<< Are the record companies going to advertise that these cd's will not be available on all cd players? I would like to see "WARNING, this cd may not play on your cd player, buy at your own risk" We'll see how that effects cd sales. >>

The warning on these CDs read as follows:

This audio CD is protected against unauthorized copying. It is designed to play in standard audio CD players and in computers running a Windows Operating System, however, playback problems may be experienced. If you experience playback problems, return this disc for a refund.

If they really wanted to stop ripping and copying, they shouldn't sell CD's at all!

So let's see...

Currently you buy a CD, make a few copies, but you can't return or exchange the CD unless it's defective. At least the company has profit from the one sale.

Now it will take a few weeks, but a simple crack is sure to start circulating. Then you can buy the CD, make a few copies, and then you'll be able go back to the retailer, claim the CD doesn't work on your system, and return the CD and get your cash back. So then the company loses the sale plus will have the additional expense of dealing with a return.

Oh yeah, that will work real nicely...

Ok people here we go....

1. now you can copy these disks then complain it doesn't work in your CD player and get a refund.....
.......now if they can do the same for PC games!

2. if Sony sell me a mini disc recorder, and I use the analog cables provided.......
.......funny how Sony own all those music labels and then sell CD writers, mini disc writers, tape/video recorders.....and now a DVD writer

3. if you still can't copy these disks then just play the cd in through your line in to make a WAV file then convert to MP3

If they want to use Digital protection then play the bloody thing Analog and recorded it, I've tested th mini disc digital protection and it dissapears when using analog

all the best......

Analog thing true. But can they not simply be played in the PC and have the "Wave input" recorded digitally in real time just as any other disc? The only limitation the security attempts to put in place is digital ripping. No?

ROTFL. So people will buy it, burn it (after they crack the scheme), scan the artwork and then return the disk because it "doesn't play".

Again, there must be idiots at the helm of this scheme. It's going to increase piracy, not decrease it.

these people are so damned concerned about security that theyre going to have to go further and further. theyll develop algorithms to encrypt the data but the security will take up most of the cd and leave you with enough room for one track on the cd. its ridiculous to think that youre going to stop every single person from breaking security on media.

Ah, has anyone tried using CLONECD to copy one of these disks?

Tick off all that error correction, jitter correction, read audio-subchannel and select RAW-DAO uncorrected writing and we'll see if that crap really is copy proof!!! Hell, clonecd even defeats SafeDisk2!

I believe you would be able to still copy the disc with clonecd.. However, that limits you to physical copies only, you still can't rip it digitally to your PC.

what would prevent you from playing it in a external cd player, and inputting it into your PC using the line in port?

Umm....this is old news. The CD has already been cracked. Some systems even list all the tracks as if it weren't even protected.

i've "heard" that copying it by clone and THEN ripping the copy seems to work.. or something like that..

Hmmm, I guess that just about does it. Almost time to put my old K6-300 back together as a ripping box. All I'd need is a HDD, a case, some RAM and a nice new Philips AE sound card plugged right into my trusty old stereo. Analog ripping here I come.
