Oxford PC. I've been researching having a custom built PC made for me (versus building my own for the first time) and found a recommendation at Tom's Hardware for these guys. Check out their site and you'll see why. Very similiar to Falcon in that you can customize the entire box. For the high-end equipment I was looking at, their prices were very similiar to NewEgg prices (I'm serious, they are). They charge $50 for putting the hard ware together, or $100 to put everything together, load the operating system, and "burn in" and "test" the system for 72 hours.

I configured the same system at Alienware, Dell, Falcon, Gateway, and Voodoo and Oxford PC was significantly better price-wise than all of them. If i do end up ordering a custom machine, it will be from Oxford PC.

Here is a quote from another thread...

And you think buying a prebuilt system is a waste of money? What about people that are too incompetent to install a heatsink? I think you need to call 1-800-WWW-DELL.
That is all...

Nothing wrong with trying and failing. I've destroyed a lot more hardware than just that in my day. But by and large, my computer building and modding has been successful. Pretty much everyone who does a lot of modding\work on their computers will destroy some hardware from time to time... That's a risk that goes with building a computer yourself. It's not overly risky, but even for masters of the art, building your own isn't as "safe" as buying one prebuilt. I could sauder together the pins on the bottom of my p4 if I wanted too... I'll still continue to build my own computers. Me screwing up doesn't mean I can't manage to build a computer, it just means I destroy some stuff in the process, and I choose to do so. It's worth it to me. Pretty much I'm saying you can go smoke a fat one.

That is one of the most moronic statements I have ever heard. Nebor... go to OT if you want to be a tool.

BTW... to the OP build your own.

And you sir, obviously don't understand sarcasm. That was a summary of Vonkhan's views on RMA policy.

I doubt it's cheaper than a Dell... unless they let you stack coupons and give you MIR's

If you're old athlon xp system was running at 55-60 degrees, heat could be the cause of your problems with stability. Get a better hsf (the stock amd ones are pretty bad).

OK, you got me. I just configured a PC at Dell and at OxfordPC.com
Dell $1809 OxfordPC $1851

Both have:

Intel P4 3.0
Windows XP Home
ATI 9800 Pro

The rest of the parts for Dell are Dell generic, while at oxford I get:

Asus P4c800-E Deluxe
Corsair TWINX XMS-LL3200 1gig
Plextor DVD drive
Antec 1080AMG case w/ 430 power
Western Digital caviar S/E 120 SATA drive

You tell me if you think Dell is cheaper. I could easily have gone a little cheaper in the memory and gotten below the Dell price. I'm telling you, I think OxfordPC has the best deals out there right now.

But if you damage\destroy your motherboard, cpu, or video card in your water cooling endeavors, go ahead and RMA them anyways, that's what Vonkhan would do.

i'd do it as well, I don't care about the company shipping out another board when they still make a profit ....

i wouldnt go NW or alienware... I'd go www.cyberpowerpc.com or just goto a local shop, pick out the parts, have em warranty it, prolly be cheaper than NW or alienware

But that's fraud! That's not what RMA is about! I suppose you feel stealing music is ok because artists are rich?

Okay...I'm a convert!! After pricing pre-builts and individual components on new egg, the choice is clear...I stand to save nearly $1200 by building it my self!! i have done it before...and now I'll do it again. thanks to all of you who participated in this most provacative thread. your advice has been, as always, invaluable!!

I'll post the specs of my new system to be ASAP.

1st matter to consider: best case for Athlon64...Antec Performance One??

Here we go again....

Antec 1080AMG case w/ 430 power

I have two. They have space, and are quiet. If you want looks, don't ask me, I want performance, function and quiet.

SSibalNom, ignore Nebor ... he's a flippin attention wh0re - replying to him only makes him more annoying

The Antec 1080AMG is a pretty good case, altho if u have the $ to spend - I'd reccomend a Lian-Li or CoolerMaster case

Alienware:

Intel P4 3.0
Windows XP Home
ATI 9800 Pro XT (256MB)
512MB RAM
Plextor 8X DVD +/- R/W Drive
120GB SATA Seagate 7200.7 8MB
Audigy 2 ZS
gigabit ethernet

$1882 after $200 MIR

I'd rather have the Alienware system than the Dell or OxFord, even with less RAM. Adding RAM rarely voids the warranty, and can easily and cheaply be added at any point later if needed.

Voodoo is good people. You can even go to thier boards and chat with the owner or call him. he will make it right if anything is wrong. I like Alienwares case but dont know about thier CS.. Dell is the absolute worst. Go Gateway enterprise series before dell.

It's funny these morons post after post keep telling you to build your own when youve clearly stated you don't want to...Sigh...

really is no such think as the "best" case... just pick one that you like the look of, and make sure it has a decent layout that will give you the cooling options you want and the expansion options you want

personally i kinda like these cases
