Here's a new level of ineptitude. GOW 4 is an 80GB download.

You read the title and you know it's not a happy one.

I just checked the preload and it's 80GB. Is there no such thing as compression in the world? Does this really need 80GB of space? The words I want to use to describe that company I can't write here. True joke of a company and the people who come up with such ideas. Really? Not one person thought 80GB is pushing it? That's when that store actually works. If it does the usual getting to 90% and failing you will run through some ISP monthly limits just attempting to get this to work.

That company will always be a joke. No matter how much they try to convince you they are changing they will always be a joke. It is truly the destiny of that organization.

Completely get where you are coming from....but...uh..you're going to buy it anyway aren't you....as will everyone else. You really want to make them listen? Wait until it is 50% off.

I know man but I already preordered that's how I know the size of the download. Which it stopped mid way and just says "play" which if you hit loads the game screen and then says the game has not been released. I know it did not finish 80GB as it's been trying to serve up the 50GB from Forza Horizon since 5PM and not even half way done. I need to stop spending money at their store. They ended up putting quantum break on steam and I have little doubt all these games will end up on steam. That's when I should buy it.

Doesn't Steam have some sort of preloading thing where it loads the primary files first so you can play the game before it finishes? Or am I thinking of something else... guess it doesn't solve the size thing...

Title can apply to OP.

How long has the community been going on about not pre-ordering to help actually protest dev and publisher shenanigans? Pre-order basically tells them they don't even need lube.

This is a silly thing to complain about. If anything, its ISP's that should be blamed, not the company. If you had gigabit internet with no bandwidth cap, this wouldn't matter.

80gb is insane. That's what - 10 dvds? it would take me a week to download a game that size on my slow, rural dsl.

Its GOW not GTA 5, how is it justifiable to have a game that size, its not like they are using mega-textures which has an excuse of taking up a lot of space.

Wow, I though GTAV was massive at 65gb. I guess this is why games don't come on discs any more. Still playing GOW3 so I will get 4 when its cheaper.

The pre-order things - companies now tie the 'exclusive' (until you see it in the Game of the Year edition usually) DLCs with pre-order. The DLC hell is one of the reason to minimize gaming investment. I.e. I look forward to Mass Effect Andromeda but will wait until at least some bugs are ironed out and at it is on sale. Total War is even worse- the DLCs are for everything (new spells, new units, new factions). fortunately for total war there are teams like Radious that make the game _much_ better at provide 10x DLC content for free.

Steam has everything. If those clowns would have copied steam for their joke store it would have all been perfect.

I woke up this morning and it still didn't finish. In fact it got stuck at 30.64GB. I paused and resumed. Now it says 0 out of 30.64GB downloaded.

I don't know what kind of stupid crap these clowns think about running a store that doesn't work. Steam for a decade has done this right. That stupid store is only good for little trinkets of apps. It's not at all capable of serving up games of this size.

If you want to troubleshoot the download it is impossible since they hide everything from the user. That's fine if your consumer oriented service works then the consumer has no need to mess with it. But it works like typical crap Windows then it better be open enough to troubleshoot because it will need to be messed with to work right.

All the suggestions involve running WSreset or deleting files in the software distribution folder which are owned by the system. So the "fix" is to take ownership of them and then delete them. That kind of troubleshooting is typical of Windows crap and so why not just let us troubleshoot it. Lock it down when this garbage system actually works.

I'm far from the only person having issues downloading an using my paid for content.

Heysus, I mean it's Forza on PC. Pardon my excitement. The only reason ever (for me) to dabble in the joke hardware called Xbox one has now "arrived" on my one and only platform. I bought it to play early since I'm away from town for next week. I might not get the chance after all.

But every time dealing with this joke of a company I've been burned. They never hold up to any promise they make. Paid extra for early play and this crap happens. I suppose you're right and I won't learn until my bowels drop on the ground from being violated so much by that Seattle chop shop.

So yeah doing actual business from those clowns is quite inept and I admit it. The best thing to do for their content is to pirate it because the user experience would be better.

Edit: sorry I'm having the same issues with Forza so I mentioned Forza. But for GOW I really don't care and you're right I shouldn't have preordered. In fact I should just hope I get what I bought working and in future just live without any MS garbage products.

This is a silly thing to complain about. If anything, its ISP's that should be blamed, not the company. If you had gigabit internet with no bandwidth cap, this wouldn't matter.

Actually I have a good unlimited connection at 120mbps. But that stupid store keeps failing. It will download 90% and freeze. Then I have to run WSreset. Then I have to delete stuff in the software distribution folder. Just look up how crappy that store is in serving up large files.

But you can't blame ISPs always. You have to consider people in rural areas and remote areas where they can't lay out the pipe cost effectively. On top of that they can't even offer the reliability of a 2 bit download manager?

How this company that has been in software for 3 decades can't get this right is shocking. Steam basically laid out the way to do this. I suspect the store was designed for little trinket fart apps and not multi gigabyte downloads. That explains a lot of this nonsense. I mean can't they properly pause and resume downloads? The technology has been around for a long time.

Even Ubisoft and origin get this right. So easy to right click and verify installation and fix the download/install. This garbage is all or nothing. If it doesn't finish it starts right from the beginning again. It is pure trash. Every time it's the same fight. GOW UE, Quantum Break. Same fecal experience every time.

Every time a new promise. This time we'll make it available simultaneously on PC and XBox. The anniversary update will fix that joke of a store. Every time you give those jokesters a chance they are consistent. Consistent at failing and disappointing.

Similar rant from 2014. Most of the size increase is coming from higher quality textures. The author does go into areas they could improve.

I'm not against higher quality textures and even the size per se. Even though I could see people complaining about a 100gig install when SSD space is expensive. Of course HDD space is dirt cheap now.

I guess my rant is over the hopeless download system they have implemented. Utterly hopeless.

I'd be mostly fine with high disk usage if I could afford a few 2TB SSD's. I just hate having to relegate certain games to a platter because windows and WoW use up like half my 840 evo. Having said that, I'm almost exclusively on Blizzard's launcher and Steam, who each have their shit together when it comes to software distribution. I'd be livid if I bought a game I couldn't play because some company couldn't copy files without breaking everything.

80 GB DOWNLOAD or 80 GB of disk space after decompression? Completely different things.

Glorious PC Master Race laughs at disk space requirements. Ha! Ha! Ha!

So Forza Horizon is a 50GB download and it says needs 60GB space. GOW it said 80GB but I can't remember if that's space or download. I doubt that it would be less than 70GB even if that were to be space.

Yeah I have a working theory here. Game companies have a stake in hard drive companies. No other reason to go full idiot and make a game use 80gb of space. They think to themselves, "Oh crap, Samsung has awesome 1TB drives for pretty cheap now, better make the games bigger."
Its a trick. A trap. A dishonest artificial move of some kind. It doesn't need 80gb. They could make it use 1/4 of that. They have a shady, dishonest, profit driven reason for making it be so huge.

Also, don't forget about perceived value. The heavier a product is, the greater its perceived value. Same with a game. The bigger it is, people think it must be LOADED with AWESOME. They need all that space to provide such a hugely complex, totally badass game.
LOADED WITH AWESOME
LOADED WITH AWESOME
LOADED WITH AWESOME

Ok, so I've been trying to figure this out and I'm sure GoW doesn't stand for Gears of War since that isn't on PC.

So... which game are we talking about?
