I just ordered a Pentium 3 700, and a ASUS CUSL2 mobo.

Forgive my ignorance, but am I going to be able to use my PC100 128MB stick of RAM from my old computer? That is assuming that I won't try to overclock it, and just want to run it at boring 700 until I get some more money to spend on the new RAM. (hoping that prices will drop a little...)

the pIII 700 runs at 100 MHz FSB (at 133 it would have a multiplier of 5.25 ->can't)so your pc100 memory will work

If you want to get cute you may be able to run that PC100 RAM @ mebbe 110-115 MHz or faster, depending on your BIOS' CAS settings and the quality of the RAM. PC100 means 100 MHz minimum, not maximum. Just like with CPU's - YMMV.

It would be criminal not to overclock that combo. One of the big advantages of an 815 over the BX is the ability to run the Ram at 100 Mhz while your CPU is at 133Mhz or whatever.

Your multiplier is fixed at 7, doesn't matter what the FSB is set at. The ability to run your Ram faster will help overall system performance, but even if the Ram is stuck at 100 Mhz, dig into that Bios and juice the CPU. Assuming you get a cBO, 933+ is very likely.

Edit: Where did you order the board/cpu from? Get a good deal? BTW, I'm not just being nosy, I'm shopping also.

i'm pretty sure only apollo pro 133 and 133a can do asyncronised memory times... ie ram at 100mhz while cpu dhugs along at 100+..

i815e, on the other hand is just like BX in the fact that the FSB and memory are locked to the same speed...

RAM doesnt appear like it's going to drop.... it sounds like it will go up, just not as dramatically.... and as everyone has said... yup, PC100 will work and mixing with other RAM is fine too.... although I personally sold my 128mb PC100 and bought 2x 128mb PC133 for my OC'ing of dual 700s w/ cB0 stepping maybe I can form the dual mhz club *G*

e-phex--no, the 815 also includes asynch FSB/Mem. I'm positive.
