The 427 AC Cobras were really nuts, but I'm drooling all over that.

*edit* I had only read the first link, looks there will be a 427 there also.

*more drool*

The very 1st Shelby Cobra. 1 owner(Carroll himself), he turned down an offer of $24m. Now it's up for auction.

I think I would rather have the 427.

I wonder if Jay Leno has enough cash to buy the original??

He turned down an offer of $24M? Is he nuts?

Edit-NM, I see it was Carroll Shelby who turned down the offer. Not like he needed the money and the car was probably very personal to him.

BTW-I bet it goes for significantly less than $24M.

Owning that would be far more thrilling than a piece of artwork sold for $24m or more. Not only that, it would be far more thrilling to show it off to people who know who Carroll Shelby is, than it would be to show off a Van Gogh to people who know who Van Gogh is.

So many cars id rather have than this. A replica is as-good and they're shit anyway with messed up weight balance. I know it's old and rare but I'd be shocked if Jay Leno buys this.

You're either a troll or a tool. No one posting in this thread could afford this car but anyone with ANY interest in automotive classics, history, or collecting would salivate over this thing. It's not the fastest, nor the coolest, nor the best Shelby (by a long shot) but it is the very first.

If you were to say you'd rather have a replica AC Cobra, I wouldn't bat an eye because while having an original would be cool, the replicas do a good job of recreating the spirit and feel of that car.

THIS car on the other hand could not be done justice by way of replica. It's not as cool as the Cobra. It's not as fancy as most other Shelbys. The draw... the appeal... the essence of this car is that it is the original. It's what started a paradigm shift in American sports cars. It's the absolute foundation of a revered empire.

Like a Picasso or Rembrandt, the car in and of itself might not speak to you. It's what it represents. It's a piece of American automotive history with an amazing story to tell. Meanwhile you look at it an all you see is "shit with messed up weight balance" SMDH

I used to work with a guy who owned an original Shelby Cobra. It was blue and it was worth more than a million dollars then (this was probably 15 years ago) and I think he paid about that for it when he bought it. I'm sure it would go for more than that today.

He never took it out and I never saw it in person but I did see pictures of it and I know for sure he had it and that it was a real Cobra. Would have liked to have seen it in person. If you have seen a Shelby Cobra on the road chances are it's a replica and not the real thing.

reading that I can't help but think how much more enjoyable a $40-50k replica might be to own....

it will be interesting to see how much these cars go for.

I never understood the draw of a car based on who owned it or even race history. If you can get essentially the exact car for substantially less money you can have the same enjoyment. But of course these things are bought and put in a collection somewhere by folks with more money than they know what to do with just so they can say they have it, and good for them. Not jealous, just a bit envious.

Oh I totally get it. Can you imagine owning a car raced by Ayrton Senna or Michael Schumacher?

The fact that this was Carroll Shelby's car definitely makes it more valuable. Is it worth $24M? I don't know... I tend to doubt it will fetch that much but you never know. It is worth what someone will pay for it I guess.
