Did Ubi soft ever remove their version of DRM? I remember a HUGE up roar over it, but then I seem to rememeber them dropping it on subsequent pressings.

The reason I ask is I loved I-III... Was not a fan of IV.....
I saw this game in the No Frills $9.90 section (Small packaging, just a cardboard case, CD sized, shrink wrapped, so I know it is not the origianl pressing) at Staples.

AND, more important than that, has anyone played it?
How was it?

Let me know.

thank you

Dunno about the DRM. It never wrecked my system.
BUT, the game was not too impressive. They moved away from the shitty Heroes 4, but it still wasnt quite as much fun as Heroes 3. 3D did not improve gameplay at all.

I would get it on Steam if I wanted to buy it today.

FYI, GoG.com has DRM-free bundles of II and III complete for under $10 each.

I still have my II and III CDs, but getting rid of the CD checks (and the crash at mission finish if the CD doesn't spin up in time ) would be worth it to me.

With them, MOO 1-2 and Blood my classic games replay queue will soon be much larger.

Never had an issue with Heroes V Gold Edition... re: DRM.

Personally preferred it over Heroes III, contrary to popular opinion.

I remember it being fun for a while.

The patching was a pain in the ass; had to reboot after every one of the 5 or 6 patches.

Not come across any issues. Bought and installed on my netbook, patched to latest version (no reboots needed inbetween that I remember), v1.5 no-cd fix applied, all great.

They moved from Starforce to Securom, so the DRM wasn't as bad as it was going to be. As for the gameplay, it was fun. Very similar to HoMM3, but it was much harder to make personal maps (I made a bunch of them in HoMM3, and couldn't figure out how to make them in this game.) There weren't really any improvements to HoMM3, other than graphics, and a few minor things were removed if I remember right.

The storyline wasn't bad either. It was a fun game. Haven't played the expansion though.

Reading this topic makes me wanna reinstall and play Heroes III again. I played Heroes V and while it was fun, I still prefer Heroes 3. The random map options were generally better on III.

Still, if you can pick up Heroes V in the bargain bin, go for it. What's it gonna hurt. I don't recall any sort of issues with the DRM on my box.

I picked up heroes 5 and the expansion as part of one of the steam sales; found it rather dry (boring) but I havent' tried the expansions yet. I remember III being a lot of fun but maybe I was just younger then. If you like that sort of game; the two KB games are a heck of a lot of fun (though they are single player only). Hum. Oh well elementals will be out soon and hopefully it will rule.

Tribes of the East added a lot to HoMM5 - mostly the addition of the dwarves (which suck, actually) and the two upgrade paths (which is awesome). Pre-Tribes, I thought HoMM5 was around the same level as 3, maybe a little less fun. After Tribes it definitely leapfrogged it.

What is a KB game?

I am part of the Elemental beta, and it has a long way to go yet.

King's Bounty...

Like HoMM.. only better (imo)

I feel it has stripped out the parts that made HoMM a bit dull and slow and added certain elements that makes it feel slicker and faster.

HoMM 5 is fun and worth playing if you enjoy HoMM 3 and turn-based strategy role playing like that. There are some innovations that make it interesting vs. 3, like the initiative deal, and the town specialties (runes for the Dwarves, etc) also make things interesting.

HoMM 3 is legendary, and still fun to this day, but if you've played it to death, then HoMM 5 is worth playing, particularly for $10. HoMM 4 is a pile of crap though, totally worthless.

I got Heroes V off Steam along with its expansions. Got maybe 5-10 hours of it it then got bored. Just not as good as Heroes III IMO.

Kings Bounty was indeed a good game. I think I got about 3/4 of the way through, doing pretty much every optional piece of the game along the way. Plan on going back and finishing it eventually.
