AMD gained a large market for its Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) products when both Microsoft and Sony decided to incorporate APUs into current-generation gaming consoles. The Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 both feature AMD semi-custom APUs on which AMD makes around $100 per APU sold, according to IHS iSuppli.

Comments made by AMD's Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Devinder Kumar, suggest AMD will be making its way into another major gaming device, other reports suggest. The gaming device in question, and the brand that will be producing it, were not named, but the new deal could prove equally lucrative for AMD.

Kumar also commented that "one [design win] is x86 and [another] is ARM, and at least one will [be] beyond gaming, right...But that is about as much as you going to get out me today. From the standpoint [of being] fair to [customers], it is their product, and they launch it. They are going to announce it and then […] you will find out that it is AMD’s APU that is being used in those products."

Well AMD needs every cent they can get...so I don't care what they do...as long as it helps keeping their Company going. xD

People are suggesting that this is a Nintendo console. Would AMD boast about a design win that isn't coming out until the end of 2016? (Don't answer that.)

Nintendo sell the odd portable console too
(I think that was the suggestion I've seen, which seems plausible enough but obviously other options!).

I doubt its Nintendo. Wii U was released just 2 years ago while the hardware for the updated 3ds was already announced. Sony and Microsoft are probably out for the same reason. Steam box maybe?

Steambox seems the most logical. I don't follow the console market that closely, but it doesn't seem like the right time of the upgrade cycle for the "big 3" unless they go against typical console release trends, and I'm not sure of a viable fifth option.

That would make sense, but then AMD's Linux drivers:

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=nvamd_binary_comparison&num=8

While AMD is generally the better offering when it comes to open-source Linux drivers given that Nouveau is community-driven independent of NVIDIA Corp, with the proprietary drivers the tables are turned. The NVIDIA proprietary Linux graphics driver was consistently delivering better performance. In some tests the Radeon R9 290 Hawaii graphics card on Catalyst was running around the performance level of the GeForce GTX 770 (a ~$70+ cheaper graphics card) and in the worse case around the speed of a GTX 760. In the games that were more CPU-limited, the Catalyst performance was tapping out at measurably lower frame-rates than where the NVIDIA performance ended. The performance-per-Watt of the graphics cards on the binary blobs were also generally more favorable towards NVIDIA; the GTX 750 Maxwell cards were delivering great results and I'm so anxious to see Maxwell in a high-end NVIDIA graphics card on Linux.

Outside of these OpenGL test results, the NVIDIA proprietary drivers tend to have better maintained legacy drivers, the NVIDIA drivers more quickly support new X.Org Server and Linux kernel releases, and generally the consensus among both Linux gamers and developers is that there's far less bugs with the NVIDIA driver than AMD Catalyst. The AMD Catalyst driver though has been improving quite a bit in recent months given all the commercial game studios now pushing Linux games, but it's still not to match NVIDIA's Linux dominance when it comes to proprietary drivers. I'll be back with more tests in the weeks and months ahead to see how future Catalyst drivers combat NVIDIA in this space and as well how the open-source drivers evolve. Coming up later this month are also some updated 4K Ultra HD Linux gaming benchmarks and other interesting graphics card tests.

P.S. According to my own informal testing, the entire Valve Complete Pack can be played at 1080p low (in OPEN GL Linux) with just a Xeon X3323 ($16 CPU), 2GB RAM, GT 630 using Linux Mint 17.1 MATE as the OS. I'd say that CS:GO is the most challenging game in the Valve's lineup, but I have a lot of fun playing it with just the modest hardware I mentioned.

I'm hoping it's Steambox. AMD has been making a genuine effort to improve things on Linux make things open, but you can't expect miracles from a company without enough cash. Nvidia on the other hand has been making things more difficult and less open.

I hope they improve their drivers.

Last time I read tech news they were allowing Mantle to be an open book to the next generation of OPEN GL.

But for now I find it amazing the entire Valve complete pack can be played at 1080p low on basically $85 or less of sale priced computer hardware. (Refurbed Optiplex 330 for $29.25 shipped after coupon code--> http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=36985125&postcount=16 , GT 630 usually goes on sale for $30 to $35 ---> http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2403091 , Xeon X3323 starts at $16 --> http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-775-cpus/ , LGA 771 to LGA 775 adapter is $2 to $3)

Is Phoronix reliable when it comes to AMD vs Nvidia .?.

From the article in your link :

The most power hungry graphics card was the Radeon R9 290 with an average draw of 238 Watts and a peak of 356 Watts. The GeForce GTX 780 Ti came in with an average of 265 Watts and a max of 360 Watts.

Not surprising giving his advocacy for Nvidia products in said article...

Steamboxes are just more or less random x86 hardware. AMD already have a few there. But of course that never stopped PR before.

Inb4 Nintendo Handheld with Kaveri/Carrizo APUs.

But seriously...what other options are there other than Microsoft (Xbox), Sony(PS, PS Vita) and Nintendo (Wii U, "Gameboys")?

Steambox isn't really a set "standard" but an "open" system unified by the OS.

Or have I missed a memo and somewhere some insane startup company wants to release some wonky Android based console again, but this time with proper hardware?

The only other idea I had was an updated Vita. The Vita was released back in the end of 2011, so this would be right about the time a processor selection would be done for the next one (provided Sony wants to do it, the Vita was kind of a bust). The current version uses ARM, so a K12 powered one would make sense.

I would probably enjoy seeing an AMD APU Driven Vita 2.

The Vita was a real letdown in comparison to the PSP back in the day...having a hardware monster that easily beats up the PS3 instead of "barely getting close" would make things interesting.

And I guess older titles could just be played in a higher res with some additional AA or filtering options.

Would buy.

Come on AMD...tell us. XD

There were rumours of a backwards/forwards compatible PlayStation 4.5...

I hope they are talking about Nintendo being the new console. This would be great and then we could start seeing better titles being released vs the kiddie crap they keep spewing out at us.would be great if Nintendo would stop all this gimmicky BS to, that they are so stuck on and just get back to the basics of being a great game company with a standard game controller, something like the Xbox360 or Xboxone has.Either that or I would like to see Sega get back into the game, maybe say Dreamcast 2?? I doubt that though and I fear they are talking about the Amazon Fire Box though.I remember seeing an article about Amazon talking about releasing a newer and more powerfull version of there Amazon Fire T.V. and wanting to compete head to head against the big 3.I really hope this isnt the case though.

I wonder if MS/Sony realized the current 2 consoles are just not up to it. A stronger CPU based console would make wonders.

Combination of that, Sony wanting to push 4K TVs, and keeping up with the pace of tablets/phones/microconsoles.

They do thats news to me??Thats the same kind of crap gamestop tries to push on people.I guess you work for game stop huh??Wii u is garbage plain and simple.
I own all three consoles right now and wii u is almost nonexistent. You cant even give these pieces of crap away. Just because Nintendo releases Mario Kart and smash bro's doesnt make it the console with the best selection of games.I would rather play an xbox360 then that junk.

We both know that with the release of Zelda, fanboys are going to push the sales.

Just how Monster Hunter was almost the sole reason for the PSP sales back in the day.

Games > Platforms.
