enermax having some troubles in this, which suprises me. their PSU's protection circuits are shutting the PSU down way below the rated continuous wattage/amperage

Q-tec put in a good show......not :laughing;

"QTec's Triple Fan 650W is clearly a joke power supply. From the triplet of cooling fans that battle against each other to cool very little, to the supposed ratings that don't even add up to 650W, finishing with the massive failure for the PSU to get anywhere near its rated output. At 350W the outputs started to fluctuate rapidly before settling down.

By 450W, efficiency was dropping like a stone, input power increasing at a very rapid rate. At 50% efficiency and 900W of input power with the PSU making a horrible screeching sound, PD and I stood well back and recorded its demise on video. At 1100W of input power (1.1 kilowatts), it popped with a massive bang, the internal fuse letting go in impressive style.

For its rediculously low cost, the QTec Triple Fan 650W can only be described as a clown's supply. Buy at your own peril and don't say we didn't warn you. The worst supply on test by quite some margin and a complete misadvertisement of capabilities, suckering people into a poor purchase."
heh let that be further lesson....dont buy cheap hi-power rated PSU's

More trustable? lol
Tom's testing was 19-24 hours straight under full load. Hexus was only a measly 30mins. THG measured and reported figures for voltage stability and ripple, Hexus only gave subjective comments on voltage stability instead of figures and did not measure ripple.

Both THG and Hexus did not measure performance with periodic mild brownouts and surges to simulate normal household operating environments .And both sites also tested their power supplies in an open box environment under cool temperature which is unrealistic.

They tested no high-end companies' units - Zippy - PCP&C or Seasonic. (Etasis = Enhance here). Didn't reveal the true mfrs of the PSUs - I'm sure the Akasa PSUs are not made by Akasa as Akasa is a packager/marketer sort of like Antec - nor are Zalman PSUs made by Zalman.

Errors in Efficiency testing methodology: Efficiency varies on a curve from low power output to high with the max usually at around 75% output. None of these PSUs will be used at max output - EVER. So their reported eff. number is almost totally useless.

The only other real shortcoming is that they didn't test ALL of the PSUs to failure. We need to know if our PSUs are going to go down gracefully or if our other components are in danger .

hehe, one og my friends has a Q-tec PSU.

I think I'll try to convince him to buy my Seasonic Super Tornado 400W

All these so-called "reviews" have sucked lately. Why can't anyone do a real power supply review with a clear and consistent testing methodology?

I've tested the Enermax 495 Noisetaker V2.0 (non-AX) and can confirm with this article that this PSU runs very cool and quiet. The efficiency is also very high (close to 80%). Due to equipment limitation, I can only load this PSU up to about 50% or rating.

Not sure why both Enermax units failed to put out at least 32A at the 12V rails.
