You're not an enthusiast with only a 650w PSU.
No one is going to care about the power consumption of the card. It's been discussed already. Power consumption isn't an issue, that's what a certain group of people tried to argue.

You care about MPG in NASCAR?

If powerconsumption, not performance, is your thing...go mid/lowrange....and quit whining

Faster is faster....get over it

I OC to really high levels and buy the best that I can afford on a teacher's salary, and I'm not an enthusiast? A Corsair HX650 is on par with any "mainstream" 850W PSU. Or, do you mean that I can't game or enjoy PCs because I'm not wealthy? Here's a news flash for you, PC lovers are in every salary bracket. Just like not all of us are elitist jerks.

You're likely one of those who was advising people to get a 1000W PSU for GTX 275 SLI, am I right?

He is being ironic mate.

Seriously you guys need to consider the whole picture. If Fermi is the better choice at my price point, then you need to add the cost for a new PSU, consider extra power costs and I have to give up upgrading to a crossfire setup in the future. If you want sli you need to give up your AMD system and pay extra for a sli MB for no reason. It's more than just the 2 cards against each other you guys need to look at the whole picture.

I'd like to see 480 go up against a new 2 gb 5870. That way we can see how they stack up without the VRAM advantage factored in. Also a test against an OCed MSI lightning to see how they compare fully OCed. Somehow I'm thinking 14% may be atypical considering this is a press unit and thus possibly a cherrypicked card.

Retail 480 vs enthusiast 5870 seems to be a fair comparison in terms of price (assuming close to MSRP at availability) so we can really see how performance holds up.

Crysis and BF:BC2 weren't so good. Honestly, I expected for it to be faster here.

In everything else, the 5870 got a beating of its life (+20% faster if not more). See Far Cry 2 and Dirt 2 with 8AA GTX480 came pretty close to 5970 in some of these titles. Thing is though, those titles don't stress a 5870 <1920x1200. So we really needed a boost in the heaviest games, where it didnt deliver.

Otherwise, good performance, but horrible power consumption. 150+W more power at load....which is more than 2x the difference in TDP of 188 vs. 250 (other reason why TDP specs are full of cr*p).

Like has been mentioned before, those Dirt benchies are interesting because they run it at ultra and show the 295 which has no DX11 on the same graph so for all we know they weren't running it on DX11.

Why are folks still using NASCAR as an example as if it helps the cause...

Ask any high performance engineer on the planet if efficiency is important... Do you not think the frequency of pit stops and the overall weight of the car from added fuel play a damn high priority in building the car?

Whether you give a shit about power doesn't matter... fact is it is very important and entirely valid for many many people.. high and low end alike.

Does this remind anyone of the old Riva TNT launch? Later, slower and hotter?
Still was a nice card to have - had a Canopus Pure3D II and Spectra TNT

A team in formula 1 had to redesign their car cause the fuel consumption was too high to finish a race.

Don't always be so thick, if it uses more power than a 5970 and is SLOWER, thats not very good. although if its really is $459 Id say the price is ok.

I think that with enthusiast cards it's certainly of small concern in general, but when you have two parts that perform fairly close and one uses a lot more power I think it's worth taking into consideration. Of course, I'd rather wait for a real review before drawing any hard conclusions.

*edit - I missed your sarcasm at the end too, and somehow all of page 5 where it was pointed out. :/

It would never hit 101c on water.

You can fry an egg on an old athlon tbird easily with no fan on it and it puts out a LOT less heat.

i think he meant he can put a boiler on the card to boil water . Dual functionality xD.

Than intended. It was supposed to match the Voodoo 2's performance (@ 110MHz) but came late clocked at 90MHz instead and running hotter than expected. The Riva TNT2 is what the TNT should have been

Ah, the TNT2
my first real graphics card back in the day

It was a Diamond Viper V770.. I'll never forget it, it was like $350

I could only get Creative's Graphic Blaster biggrin. So sad that Canopus stopped making cards then

Why are people comparing a single gpu to a dual gpu?.....dual gpu's have issues single gpu's do not for starters....and as afaik the 5970 still gets raped in tesellation by the 480?

I'm wondering which card the next Mac Pro (dual 6-core) might be getting: Radeon 5870 or Fermi GTX480?
(unless Apple decides to go with their usual crippled/previous generation video card).

An irony, too, that rarely gets a nod from those who assert that all motorsport is profligate, is that a good racing car is an efficient racing car

And as a point of interest, what power supply do you have Lonbjerg?

Why not. issues used to be bad scaling and power consumption (285 vs 4870x2)
The scaling is still there but not as bad. Tesellation isn't a game and I could say the same about bout Crysis. I wonder how loud the 480 is.

If it weren't for the immense power consumption, I'd say its a good buy.
