Hey all you lucky freaks with PS2's...

...How is the DVD movie quality? Is it comparable to a regular DVD player? At this point, with so few quality games, I think this is a more important consideration for a $300 box of plastic. The reason I ask is I have a friend who may be able to score one for me, and I'm dying for a DVD player.

I assume your talking about PC-DVD, a software called, WinDVD, PowerDVD, etc.... works just fine with any PC running above P200(not very sure) You can also buy a DVD Decoder card that has video out, Audio Out... (Sigma, etc..).

I use to have a Creative 6X DVD but returned it, not satisfied with the video quality, even though I have a good GeForce2DDR Video card, instead I bought a Sony DVD for $500, hook it up to my WEGA 32" Trinitron.......happy...............

Umm...actually I was talking about PS2 DVD quality. But thanks for the info about Creative Lab's DVD players, I've heard they aren't the best.

BlClay, he's talking about Sony's PS2 videogame console, not
some PC DVD software.

Giovanni, I've only watched a couple DVD's with my PS2 but
I've been pretty happy with it so far. I currently have it connected
through my VCR via some RCA cables so I imagine would look even
better when connected directly to a TV via a S-Video cable (sold
serperately). The only annoying thing is that their isn't a timer,
so you'll never know how much of a movie you've watched.

casiotech : Notice I called them freaks I definitely wouldn't pay more than $300 for the thing. It would just be nice to get a good game system and a good DVD player in one box.

You know what I hate, they are making way to many consoles that are for the same generation, before it was psx/n64, now there are 4 systems including the dreamcast!

I read that in japan the sold more ps2's than games at launch. People were buying ps2's as dvd players!! The ps2 is 450 bucks here in canada WAY too expensive for a console.

That was true at first, but the current numbers coming out
of Japan state that Sony has sold 4.3 PS2 games for each
console (it's only been out for 6 1/2 months there). Part
of Sony's stated PS2 strategy is to attract people who
traditionally have showed no interest in gaming consoles,
in other words: hook non-console videogame people with the
DVD player and then seduce them into buying very profitable
games. That strategy seems to be working for them, at least
in Japan.

as far as I can tell the DVD playback on my PS2 looks great to me.
All the anime dvds I played had a clear sharp picture.

My roomate got his PS2 last friday. We tried the DVD with the VCR passthrough, and it looked like ASS!! Turns out that if you try to passthruogh the VCR the macrovision makes it look funky.

We then hooked it up directly to the TV. Looks much better. BUT, the SVideo adaptor is not out yet! (at least we couldn't find it anywhere) so it is not fair to make a comparison to SVideo output of a standalone DVD player.

But I can comment on a few other things.

The access time of the DVDs seems quicker on the playstation. It loads faster, and goes through the menu options quicker.

It also handles the layer-changes better than our stand-alone player. It passes the DolbyDigital signal fine with the TOSLink connected to a DD reciever.

But the PS2 itself is pretty loud. The DVD drive is loud (in games and with DVDs) and the fan is loud (compared to a stand-alone DVD player that doesn't have a fan at all!). The LCD display is also MUCH better on the stand-alone player.

I have yet to try some more challenging DVDs (Matrix, T2 Ultimate Edition) to see if the PS2 chokes.. but it seems pretty solid!

The picture is good with the RCA cables, but would be MUCH better with SVideo.

hehe no I don't think the price will even drop any till the next 2 consoles(next year) when it does I am guessing $199.

If it does drop before then $249 or so then they will drop to $199 a month before X-Box and Gamecube are released.

pretty sad to say i couldnt get any ps2 cause bestbuy and other stores ran out,but my friend has it and compared to my living rooms pioneer dvd player it looks the same but it is pretty loud like them generic dvd player g/e electronics or something they sell at walmart for 100bucks, but thats if you sit like 2-3 feet away from it. if you sit on the couch(i think everybody does)you wouldnt notice the difference,also hook up your 5.1 speakers to it and dd sounds great.
