I don't know. But we hired a guy from Denmark and it's ridiculous the amount of holidays he is required to get. Shouldn't even give him vacation time.

it's time off to study for exams

it's just really bad translation on the part of the OP.
the Danish term is "læseferie" which means reading/study vacation/holiday.

a fulltime employee will have almost 8 weeks time off this year (12 holidays + 6 weeks vacation)

I don't think we are required to give him his 6 weeks of vacation. But the holidays are mandated by the government. We get 6 paid holidays here.

you get up to 5 weeks (if you've worked full time throughout last year) of paid vacation (feriedage) by law, but if you're not covered by an accord (I'm guessing he's not) you aren't guaranteed the extra week (feriefridage) but most companies give them anyway.

I feel pretty bad for you Americans, your work week is longer AND you get less time off.

I don't speak French - but, I think it translates to: my food is undercooked, would you kindly bring me a bag of nails?

37 (the average for men)for most, but a significant number only works 32 hours (the average for women).

edit: I meant longer as in hours

Damn. That would be nice. Though since I'm salary I could technically work whatever hours I want as long as I'm fulfilling the needs of my position.

technically you're supposed to put in whatever hours is in your contract here but I'm guessing most people will just leave early if they're done. Of course if they constantly leave early the employer will just find more shit for them to do which I imagine is pretty universal no matter where in the world you are

I get 6 holidays + unlimited PTO. Yes, unlimited PTO. They track it (obviously) but you can generally take as much time off as you want as long as you're not impacting project deliverables/deadlines and you're not taking off something ridiculous like 5 months.

As it should be. if you work is getting done, why be in the office?

15 vacation days, 9 paid holidays at the company I work for in the US. I typically work 40-42 hours/week.

I think 12 holidays and 6 weeks vacation should be the world minimum for any person working any job anywhere

That said, I'm in the US, and I get 30 days "PTO" and 6 paid holidays. But PTO is combined sick + vacation, so's really more like 1 week sick and 5 weeks vacation.

Also, Where I work, you need to have 15 years seniority to get 30 days PTO. We just switched over to PTO from having seperate Vacation + Sick Banks. Used to take 25 years to get to the maximum level, now just 15. So even though I'm only in my 30s, I'm now getting the maximum amount of PTO that the company gives to non-executives/non-management professionals.
