Freelancer was awesome.

What the update needs most is the a home base for yourself where you can store ships and stuff, and a more fully realized play mode after trhe campaign is done.

I had so much fun with it that I really wanted to keep playing, and I did try a few times to do some missions. But it felt so empty and pointless.

You mean like EVE Online?

Does EVE have storyline for MMO like TOR does? Also, I cannot tolerate EVE due to it not being direct flight. Shields and armor should allow it to be twitch combat, not indirect orders. Otherwise I'd be playing EVE now probably.

No, EVE isn't story focused like The Old Republic.

On the other hand, TOR ground combat isn't twitch combat either. EVE's combat system is nothing like Freelancer, but a lot TOR and most MMORPGs. If what you actually want is an MMO with traditional space sim mechanics then try Jumpgate.

Jumpgate Evolution is apparently DOA. Is the old one still going? I do care about graphics, it's from 2001.

You must be remembering the wrong game.
Freelancer was most definitely NOT "on-rails". It was the Elders Scrolls in space. Only, not nearly as good. :hmm:

Enforced jumpgate restrictions until you beat a certain part of the story.
Enforced disagreements with certain factions as you progressed through the story.
Level restrictions and equipment restrictions unless you completed parts of the story.

Now I haven't bought Skyrim yet, more important games on my list to work at but I don't think Morrowind or Oblivion were as restrictive as Freelancer is.

The missions were alright and the 'yeah go do trading until you have X amount of money" was a very loose way of saying that you need the money because you can upgrade now/soon.

An on-rails space shooter with average story and good gameplay.

More like changed to xbox exclusive studios, then shut down.

Microsoft should never have entered the console market, they should have focused on making games and becoming a premier third-party publisher for most popular platforms (and independent studios rip for assimilation).

Well the one thing most developers griped about was having to code for such a wide array of PCs with varying specs and hardware. Consolizing remedies that. The one (but not the only) problem I see with this is that these consoles are getting long in the tooth and need a refresh, like last year.

And it would be nice to see a space sim that actually tried to mimic real physics for once. I want to see blasts from engines being used to change ship direction instead of some imaginary ailerons, elevators and rudders. That always irritates me.

Realistic spacecraft controls are horribly unintuitive. (accelerate for 5 minutes to get somewhere faster? I hope you figured on the 5 minutes it's gonna take you to stop. Want to make a sweeping 90 degree turn? I hope your muscles are calibrated for sine!)

Realistic physics would just be an endless fight with the controls, and no way could you do it with just the mouse. You'd need a 3 axis joystick with throttle.

Give it to me then! haha. Actually, I would assume at least some degree of computer-assisted navigation. Throw a little sci-fi into the story line such as something like 'gravity anchoring', give it a bullshit story about dropping micro black holes to slow you down or some crazyness. Anything but the 'airplane' model will do! (Ailerons, elevators etc...)

Maybe they are getting there, but taking the Sega route?

They did it, 10 years ago.

I am pretty sure both the later wing commanders and tie fighter had relatively accurate flying mechanics.

Didn't the venerable Frontier: Elite 2 use Newtonian physics in it's flight model?

As if they were flying through atmosphere maybe, but almost no space games have accurate space physics. Thats why they usually make up bullshit like "Heisenburg compensators" and such.

Old thread & OT but it was bugging me over the holiday period...

Have you tried Arvoch Alliance? It looks like it has what you want, probably more than what you want. Try the Demo and see if the flight model is more to your liking.
