I second this. And make it a little more complicated than the first one. Allow me to do energy transfers to different systems (shields, engines, thrusters, maybe shutting down parts of the ship life support systems(similar to a submarine war game I played in DOS) Assigning crew to close down those systems and such.

And it would be nice to see a space sim that actually tried to mimic real physics for once. I want to see blasts from engines being used to change ship direction instead of some imaginary ailerons, elevators and rudders. That always irritates me. I'm not really sure how fire would be displayed in space but somebody can figure it out.

Was #1 really good enough to make #2?

On-rails space shooter with average story and almost pointless trading elements.

Don't get me wrong, I had fun, completed it in just a few days and cracked it out twice since then because it's possibly better than playing Freespace 1 + 2 for the 6th time but it wasn't *all that*.

Not really. As you said, more than half of the game is pretty much pointless fluff. Talking to people on starbases, trading etc... none of it added to the game.

I think wanting a sequel is in hopes that depth would be added and that the general design of the game is revamped. (since nobody else is trying to keep this genre alive)

Imagine if a space shooter game could be geared-up to be as competitive as most FPS's are online... Capture the 'starbase' matches. I'd prefer if they went with a complicated approach rather than a 'shoot and reload' ala COD approach.

A FPS in space could be a badass move forward in computer gaming if one was to be made and not console-simplified.

EDIT: I just realized after I had posted that this has kind of been done before. 'Tachyon: The Fringe' had multiplayer capture the flag with resource gathering and such. That was years ago. Unfortunately I found the game after it was passed its time and the online servers were mostly dead.

You must be remembering the wrong game.
Freelancer was most definitely NOT "on-rails". It was the Elders Scrolls in space. Only, not nearly as good. :hmm:

Of course it will likely require GFWL, which will make it difficult to justify buying.

Oh crap I forgot about that.
And they'll probably make you pay 50 cents apiece for hull decals and hair styles and you have to log 3 hours a day in the Neptune Cafe socializing with 12 year old morans just to get anything done.

Fuck that shit.

There are still some quite large conversion/addition type mods being updated to this day, some of them (like Crossfire) expand the game into previously unexplored territory, almost a unofficial expansion if you will.

Microsoft should either pass on the rights to FL to a responsible developer or make a sequel already.

Microsoft quit making PC games. All their PC gaming studios were changed into Xbox only studios, or shut down.

More or less this.

Add to that the fact that "Telling" Microsoft anything is an exercise in futility, isn't it?

I'd love to see Freelancer 2. I had great times exploring the galaxy with my friends back in the day. Now the network play doesn't work on Vista or 7.

Also it was the first directx 9 game... so pretty

More like changed to xbox exclusive studios, then shut down.

Microsoft should never have entered the console market, they should have focused on making games and becoming a premier third-party publisher for most popular platforms (and independent studios rip for assimilation).

Actually.

What we need is a Freelancer sequel that has more depth, and is better designed for multiplayer.

In fact, an MMO that does in space what TOR does on the ground would be most appropriate. Need special focus on PvP. Ships can have shields and hit points just like players.

You mean like EVE Online?
