At HH Gregg all day Friday they have a $39 VCR or/and a $39 DVD player after $20 rebate. If they run out of the advertised model, they will sell you the next best model for the same price. They also have a 2.4 ghz cordless phone for $9.94 after $10 rebate.

Demontooth:

You beat me to it. This one is probably only good in the Midwest, and appears to be an outstanding B&M PM possibility for the Circuit City AD-1200 to in order to get back another $11. No pesky "Oh, it's out of stock" from CC can apply here with HHGregg's in-stock guarantee.

Note that CC has AD1200s, AD1201s and (most important for me) the flashable/Macrovision disableable AD1500s for sale this morning at $49 (they all ring as AD1200s) ... PM to HHGregg, and the deal is

49.99 (CC) - (10*110%PM=11) = 38.99

provided, of course, that CC will match an after rebate price. I've never tried that, but allegedly CC will.

Curiously, HHGregg also has a "double the difference" guarantee which is:

"Your purchase is price protected if purchased through one of our retail locations. If within thirty days after your purchase (14 days for computers, notebooks, printers and monitors) you find a lower price from a competitor's local store (within a thirty-mile radius) on the same in-stock brand and model, available with a manufacturer's warranty in a factory-sealed box, we'll refund you double the difference between their price and ours. To claim your refund, simply bring in your original H.H. Gregg receipt and proof of the lower price. Our "Double the Difference" price guarantee does not apply when the competitor's price includes free or bonus offers, financing, delivery, installation or rebate offers, nor on one-of-a-kind or limited offers, internet pricing or products purchased on-line. "

Which means you walk in at 1030AM, and try and PM the other way to CC, and with the DVDs probably already gone at CC, they don't do the match. Maybe, tho, you get lucky ...

Now, if you're bound and determined to do this at HHGregg, the order of the day would appear to go as _late_ as possible in order to harvest the very best DVD they have available.

I went in this morning to HH Greg and they had both the 1200 and 1500. Both the same price.

I hummed and hawd about it for 2 hours since I already had an AD600A and then went back and bought the 1500.

For reference: Columbus OH, West Broad Street

This deal just warmed up a bit -- at least at my store in suburban Dayton, Oh. They ran out of the Apex 1200, Apex 1500, Mitsubishi DD-4030s and are now substituting in the JVC XV-S302SL. $59 - $20 rebate = $39. Not bad at all for a decent DVD.

There is a NEW VERSION of the AD-1500 out. THIS NEW VERSION *CANNOT* BE UPGRADED WITH THE AVAILABLE FIRMWARE, AND IT WILL *NOT* PLAY THE VCD FORMAT!!! So, if you are interested in receiving a 1500 which can be upgraded with the available firmware, it is recommend that you do NOT purchase the player from Amazon.com or Longs Drug Stores! (HH Gregg stores are also carrying the new model)

Here are the external "clues" which indicate that a 1500 is probably one of the newer versions:

- The serial number sticker, located on the long sides of the box, is YELLOW (instead of white)
- The serial number itself begins with "D150002".
- There is no mention of VCD support anywhere on the box or the player

The only reason people like Apex players are because they are CHEAP and will play almost anything that fits in the disc tray, well, production of the players stopped in November 2001, and then resumed June - July 2002, with a new version of the Apex AD-1500 players, players that DO NOT play VCD's.

This must be a YMMV. I got a 1500 from HH gregg with a serial number yellow sticker. It flashed with new firmware no problem! No macrovision. Tested it out. So, looks like not all is lost! There are some that can still be flashed even with the above labeling.
