Hi-def sound device problem on Maximus IV Extreme-Z

Just installed recently an Asus Maximus IV Extreme -Z with the latest bios and the latest Win 7 install from technet. Also using the last 2 releases of the nvidia drivers and the asus-provided Realtek HD codec files.

Getting a yellow ! exception in the system tree under Sound->High definition audio device. 'Cannot start - Location 3 (Internal High Definition Audio Bus'

I've tried removing the nvidia HD audio driver, rebooting hoping that the realtek would take over but no luck. Actually if I uninstall the device, it will reinstall itself within about 10 seconds.

Any thoughts on this? I thought for sure removing the nvidia sound device from 'programs' would work, but nothing.

Completely back out all of your audio drivers, driver clean and and reinstall from scratch?

I have this mobo.

I don't know WTF is wrong with Nvidia's "high def audio driver" but it has always borked my audio setups, on this board and every other I've owned.

What you need to do at this point is (1) custom full install a previous Nvidia driver version (be sure to check that checkbox for clean install), (2) make sure you deselect installing the HD audio driver, (3) do another custom clean install to re-upgrade your Nvidia drivers to the current version (again deselecting the NV audio stuff), and (4) reinstall your mobo-specific audio drivers to over-ride the Nvidia ones.

I just got this motherboard and a GTX 570, and I'm going through the process of installing Windows 7 and getting everything set up. All of my devices look good, except for this one. I've tried following your instructions, but I haven't had any luck - it still says that the device cannot start.

Does anyone have any other tips?

Do you have a "Intel(R) Display Audio" in your "Sound, video and game controllers" -list? If not, it might be your odd missing "High definition audio device". Install driver from your mobo's support disk (let update browse your support disk). This fixed this issue for me (running ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z + EAH6970 DCII + Windows 7 64-bit).
