I use that 17.4 DVI planar at home, and a 17" Viewsonic (not DVI) at work, and while the one at home is brighter they are both sharp.
So dont limit yourself to DVI. I tell you I can look at a computer screen all day now thanks to LCD, a CRT would give me a headache in an hour, I could never go back (unless I was a gamer 'cause there is ghosting).

I don't have perfect 20/20 eyesight but I don't have poor vision either. Plus I'm not a gamer and could really use more desktop space. But as you guys pointed out this deal isn't as hot as I thought, so I cancelled my order and will continue to "suffer" with my 19 Dell P991 (FD Trinitron) until a sub $500 17.4 LCD deal comes around ...

ScrapSilicon - Here's a decent laptop deal worth checking out, or get a great deal on an IBM ThinkPad A or T series (as low as $799 for a P3/800) or wait for the next flaming hot deal on a Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop or the new 4200.

lcds especially cheap ones don't match crts imagewise esp in terms of contrast.. resolutions also blow. good for wordprocessing iguess, but not hot deals really.

Order about two dozen hot deal monitors/computers and have them all shipped UPS ground or Parcel Post. By the time you finish all the insurance claims, locating which nieghbor really got them, or which city they were REALLY delivered too, you might have it all out of your system.

Bah, you need to think big. Buy 2 15" LCDs, and when you go XP get ready for some dual monitor sweetness (with a dual output card or a seperate PCI video card). Doesn't take up too much deskspace, you'll have more workspace than your 19", and your eyes will thank you. Just make sure you get a better LCD than that Gateway garbage, spring for a Samsung or even a KDS (gamers like them). Whatever you do, don't buy into the Viewsonic/Sony crud, there's better for the price.
