nice little homestead.

we are only 1 acre, just chickens and dogs, greenhouse, 3ksqft garden, adding meat rabbits and more chickens this spring. wife wants a goat though.

Unfortunately you can't get just one goat. If you get one, you need two and want three. Herd animals.

We have a couple rabbits, but they pets. Will be getting more chickens this year though. Not ready to do meat chickens, but that's coming too.

Much respect. I'm all for people enjoying their hobbies and growing livestock.

It's more fun than most day jobs, but the pay sucks. So I have to keep a day job.

Wow that's a name I have not seen around in a long time.

Looks like you're having fun.

It's my dream to eventually build an off grid homestead. No immediate plans for livestock but that kind of comes with the territory so I'd probably eventually get some. At least chickens anyway.

I've not really ever left. Just went into super-lurker mode when life became more important than postcount. We'll likely never be off grid, though some aspects of what I want to do out here will be. Like an off-grid Airbnb cabin. Unfortunately I don't have the funds to make that happen right now, so that'll wait.

And then there's my yard art. Peanut and Pauly. They love to rub their asses on the fences. Fun times.

yeah man...mammals and avians do not like having their light cycles interrupted. At least not the diurnal types (Cats are just, well, they have a non-mammal schedule. because they are cats, somehow. It makes no real sense. anyway...)

But they adjust pretty quickly. If you have 2 nights like that per week, after maybe a couple of months, they'll adjust and maybe start laying eggs about 1 hour later than before, consistently, ....just because. heh.

Random thought, I wonder how chickens would behave on the ISS.
it's not that random. animals and "general agrarian" research projects have long been a focus of space exploration.

I think rats and other small rodents have been brought in on the space shuttles at times, to try and look at physiological effects from gravity, like fertility and general husbandry needs (seriously: first couple that gets sent into space? You know why they are that...but also, I'm sure other such human projects have already been sent up, probably not very publicly, to test these things--because we actually do want to know how successful we can be at getting busy in space. This is pretty important knowledge, that never gets discussed on fake nerd shows, like Star Trek ).

Maybe that's what that inflatable module was for. No hard walls or instruments to bump into durring the uhhh, experiment. Those ground control update intervals would be rather awkward though.

"*Heavy breathing* This is ISS to Houston for regular update, experiment 53-Xray still going nominal, over"

"10-4 this is Houston to ISS, you may continue. We received your feed and continue collecting data stream"

interesting choice of word there, if it were you I wouldn't like to be fondled either.

You're going to have to find that one for me. I've posted several foods before but cheese waffle thing doesn't ring a bell for me.

Is that how it lost the front leg?

Butt of horse!

Not sure. Depending on the situation, I do occasionally enjoy a good fondling.

What's your processor's lead time these days? Still measured in years?

We won't have anything to process until 2022 year at the earliest. These two beautiful gals won't be bred until really late this year at the earliest.

Oh yeah - I have pigs too. The cream gilt is Penelope and the mottled one is Gertrude. "Peppa and Gertie" for short.

Pre-Covid, they were usually a 6 month lead time, but now its over a year to get a slot. Some of the processors are booked over 2 years out though. I'm stuck feeding 2 steers right now that I had hoped to have in the freezer already, but with the pandemic everyone is hitting the small processors.

Yowza! I didn't know they were hitting 2 years now. I heard 1 year plus. Thankfully I don't have to worry about it right yet. What type of cattle are you raising?

And 15 new baby chicks ordered for February. No, we don't hatch our own eggs - all girls here.
Definitely the way to go. Hens are nice to have around but roosters are just a pain in the ass.
