hibernation gone???

windows gave me an alert saying that it was unable to enter hibernation. and now the option is removed from the power option menu. is there anything i can do to restore this option?

"Enable Hibernation"
Click on the start button and select turn off computer. Then hold down the shift key and the hibernate button will be shown. Click it and your computer will enter into hibernation.

It does that o most of the windows machiens iv used
It only happens when i add or remove hardware/

This has always bothered me.

I sometimes try and hibernate my laptop, and Windows aborts the process saying "Insufficient resources to complete Windows API". The Hibernate option is then gone and I have to shutdown my laptop completely. Why remove the option? And more importantly, why not explain why the API call failed?

Hmm, never seen that. There is a bug where if the machine has 2GB of RAM or more, hibernation will fail. But I never saw it remove the option after that happened. There's a hotfix for the 2GB problem.

Really? Do you have a link to the hotfix?

My laptop has 2 GB of RAM now, although I had hibernation issues when I had just 1.2 GB.

That should be it, although that article says more than 1GB can cause the issue.

Removing Hibernation may be some 'feature' that the developers added. In their little section of cubeland in Redmond, they may have figured that if you got to this error, it was really bad. They might have thought they were helping you so it did not happen again. We won't tell anyone so that they charge you extra!

My laptop has 2 GB of RAM now, although I had hibernation issues when I had just 1.2 GB.

I've seen Windows have problems hibernating (not sure if it was XP or 2000 since it was so long ago) when apps like FF are running, closing them will allow the system to hibernate but defeats the purpose of hibernation. I've heard some speculation that it has to do with extremely fragmented memory, but that's not something I could really investigate on Windows.
