High End Build Suggestions?

I mainly will use this computer for work, maybe a game here or there. I do video editing, graphics, audio editing, lots of browser windows/tabs open at all times... I need a system that is quiet as possible but not sacrificing speed.
Budget $6-10k+ (within reason.. I don't want to spend thousands more for one item that will only give me a 1% increase in performance, etc)

Monitors: Either Two LG 38" UltraWide 38UC99-W or One 38UC99-W and a matching 16:9
GPU: AMD for the Free Sync but which card? and how many?
CPU: Intel not sure which one i7? Xeon?
Overclock? No
Mobo: I plan on using all SSD, m.2, etc... I need stability and reliability
RAM: Much as possible... i multitask and leave a LOT of stuff running all the time.
HD: SSD, M.2, etc... Was thinking maybe: SAMSUNG 960 PRO M.2 2TB or better?
2nd HD: SSD 4tb or larger
Case: Small as possible and quiet
PSU: Something reliable and quiet
Speakers: JBL LSR308 Studio Monitors
Keyboard: Something quiet
Mouse: Something quiet
Old Equipment? No, giving old computer to my son

Even with that kind of budget, I'd go for an AMD AM4-based system. While the i7-6950X does beat the Ryzen 7 1800X due to having two more cores, it's clocked lower at stock, and costs almost 4x as much. The 6950X is only worth it if you overclock it quite heavily, or specifically need 10 cores, 4-channel memory or lots of PCIe (for example for multiple PCIe x4 m.2 drives). To get anything better than that, you need a Xeon, and that easily pushes you into the "thousands more for (...) 1% increase in performance" range.


Other than that: "Samsung 960 Pro 2TB or better" - there is no better drive than that. Period. Not even enterprise drives at 4x the price will beat the 960 Pro 2tb for most/any workloads. As for a 2nd 4TB SSD, there's only one real alternative: the Samsung 850 Evo 4TB. Stocks of that drive are very, very low, however, as flash shortages (projected to last at least until the end of the year) are forcing manufacturers to focus on lower capacity, higher volume models. You can still find it, though. It sounds like you're prepared to pay for it, but do note that this combination alone is currently more than $2700. Just saying. If you can in any way use an HDD instead, you'll get many times the capacity for your money.


When you say "as small as possible" for your case: do you want something smaller than a regular ATX case? That leaves you with two alternatives: go mATX, which is slightly smaller (though some cases are very space efficient, others are barely smaller than ATX offerings), or go ITX (which can get truly tiny) but compromise on memory (ITX boards can't fit more than 2 DIMM slots). mATX would probably be the best compromise, as boards for all platforms are usually quite plentiful while not really losing out on any features. What's your frame of reference for case size? Could you be more descriptive in terms of how small you want it? Toaster size? Carry-on suitcase? What case do you have today, and is it okay, too big, way too big?


In general, though, waiting a few months might be your best choice. AMD is (rumored to be) launching their X399 platform with up to 16-core CPUs, more PCIe lanes, and quad-channel memory support. This will most likely be very price competitive when compared to Intel's up to 10-core X99 platform. Intel will also be launching X299 soon, which might make this space even more competitive (rumors say 12-core CPUs, though no word on pricing). Also, AMD doesn't have any competitive graphics cards in the high end these days (their last high-end offering was the Fury X, launched in 2015), but their high-end Vega lineup will be launching before the end of June, and should at the very least compete with the 1080Ti for performance. If I were you, I'd hold off until summer. You'll most likely get a far better PC for your needs by then. If I were to speculate, you could probably get a 16-core AMD X399 system with 64-128GB of RAM, your storage of choice, a high-end Vega GPU and some Titanium-rated, ultra-quiet PSU (fanless?) and noise-insulated case for quite a bit less than your maximum budget.

u may want to wait til AMD and Intel both shoot off their new flagship.

I agree with aigomoria and Valantar about waiting until after AMD and Intel releases their flagship CPUs. At that budget I would be keeping that system for a long time.

august is when we start seeing some new intel cpu's.

Sept/Oct, is when i think we will see AMD's threadripper.
