My computer is being built with the basic intention of lasting me at least the next 2-3 years with only a few needed upgrades (GPU, memory). It would be preferable to be able to not need upgrading in these areas: CPU, Mobo, monitor, case, psu. Is now an oportune time to purchase a new high end pc or should i wait for the next cpu chipsets from AMD and intel?

This will be used for (in order of use): web surfing, listening to music, torrenting, office applications, gaming, watching movies, picture editing. What is crucial to me is that I have a pc that has the best oc potential along with the ability to multi-task like a madman with minimal dely.

Here's what I think I want:

x2 4400+
Lanparty nfi SLI-Dr
OCZ 2 x 1GB DDR 400 (PC 3200) Platinum plus my 2 x 512 kit of OCZ value (have)
Antec 550 true control (any comments) $119 @ frys
silverstone temjin 06 (love this case but try to sell me on P 180) $110 @ frys
2x160 gb seagate sata ncq (7200.7) $50 each @ frys
ati x800xl (basically moving this from other system)
2005 fpw (cant justify $400 more dollars for 2405)

thanks ahead of time

Pick up OCZ DDR 500. Ditch the 512 kit. Don't mix sizes.
PSU fine, that's a good deal.
Good Proc and MoBo choice.
Case is fine if you like the look.
Good deal on the HD's if you can get them at that price, but 250GB drives tend to have better price-per-gb under non-sale prices.
Fine GPU, but your gonna want to upgrade ITF.
Nifty display, if you really want an LCD.....

Your Welcome.

"pretty much sold on this because if i get a cheaper gpu i can feel less obligated to use it instead of studying"

Why not cut down the rest of the system then too?

Yea I actually don't get the statement the OP said.... If he gets a cheaper gpu, he will feel less obliged to game instead of studying? So you want to spend more time gaming than studying? Look, either get a low end GPU or a high end GPU, period. While your at it, just get lower end everything if your not gaming, WTF needs X2 AMD 64 for school!? Autocad anyone? If so, then you'd need a high end GPU. Video encoding? Then you'd adjust your system accordingly so that it'd be optimized for video encoding... This system just doesn't make any sense at all.

sorry, i meant that the x800xl i want to keep from my old system because it will give me less of a reason to game too much vs the price premium of a 7800 line.

anyway...

I'm just thinking that if you're going to put a midrange part in that's one of the most crucial components of a gaming computer, it would be a waste to spend so much on the rest of it.

I think you have some nice stuff picked out, but I don't see the point if you're trying to limit its gaming ability.

oh... do you like to listen to music as you study?

I recomend a 19" not a 20" widescreen If you want a widescree, get 24". No compromises. Why get a monitor only as tall as a 17" screen. Lame. 19" should have more display area.

I recommend you to get a better PSU. OCZ Powerstream or Seasonic 600 or something good. No 7800GT? I say you have the money. I only spent 2200.

Just use the 2gb(2x1gb) of ocz and sell your other stuff. You could also sell your x800xl. That might push your limit up to $2,700. If you're gonna go big then go BIG. Spend all you've got put aside for the system...that's what a budget is for right? I'd say get a GTX or wait till ATI has their launch...

Sell your 2x512MB OCZ value and get 2x1GB OCZ value. More expensive RAM doesn't really make much of a difference in performance. Go with a 3800+ instead and just overclock. Sell your X800XL and get a 7800GT(X). The eVGA version comes with a free SLI motherboard (rebranded Jetway, pretty nice board). Go for the 2405FPW. If you can afford it, why not get it? Perephirals are pretty much the only computer parts that don't really decrease in value that much. And go for a nice set of speakers since you have the money.

Nope that is not compatible w. the DFI... goto DFI-street and read up on the PSU A-List. (its compiled by users for users)

Why SLI??? If U want to go SLI either get either the OCZ Powerstream 520 (2*6600) or if U plan 2*6800+ the OCZ PowerStream 600. PCPnC will set U up as well as long its one of their 500+ Watts.

Then the RAM 2*1 is good but look in to DFI-street and check up what sticks... We had a couple of posts w. issues w that memory since it doesn't use the same chips as the 512Mb sticks. BH-5 vs. Hynix iirc.

I U want to stay w. 800xl wait until oct. nov. since the DFI crossfire should arrive then.

4400+ is what Id get if I could afford it.
re: monitor... I dont have a clew...
On HDDs get the Hitachi SATA2:s they really rewl in a RAID0 on that MoBo.... Beats Raptors with an ok margin.
