High Failure Rate in Radeon 7970s

Is all of this is based just on data you got from Newegg ?

That would be like me saying everyone is using 32 bit windows 7 based on the last steam hardware round up.

I'd say Steam would give good results, due to the large sample size, and you can consider that for gamers only.

However, reviews from a retailer is a different animal all together. Generally, people never give a review unless they have an awful experience, or exceptional one. Most people just don't give a review on a retail site.

Steam on the other hand, gets everyone that uses Steam to analyze, except the few who opt out.

I did not read the whole thread so please bear with me if this has been answered but you have to assume there is going to be some people who RMA or assume DOA without properly testing. I just installed my new 7970 (Gigabyte model) and found that it would not start at all and I was getting a 0x97 error which mean no GPU. I was getting pretty frustrated and had tested with different cables and in different PCIe slots with no luck. Finally I threw the card in another pc and it worked great. This lead me to do some more research and I found out that others had needed to update their mobo bios. I tried that and the card worked and is now happily mining away.

There could be quite a few people that had this, or something similar, happen to them and their first reaction is to RMA. I consider myself relatively tech, at least PC, savvy and I still almost thought I had a bad card.

Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me at all. Definitely not the best way to get reliability data, but the only way yet explored on this thread except for

go straight to the manufacturers or get the RMA processes from Newegg to figure the actual rates
