High-pay, little skooling jobs...

I'll get the politics outta the way first. I know some people in the world feel working hard for years and years and all that BS = $$ (let's leave job satisfaction out for now). I'm not one of those people. Most of these jobs are not necessarily for those who lack eduation; they simply don't require years of schooling to enter. Usually higher paying jobs require specialization, willingness to do something disagreeable/risky. High risk of course = higher rewards tho.

My brother is looking for something new to do after being a mechanic for ~ 10 years. With a mortgage in NorCal, wife, and 2 kids, he's not going to be able to survive on $2.5k/month. I'll start...

* entertainment -> this is a broad range and altho my brother does not have the skills/knowledge/willingness to start such a business entity, I think a adult webcam/porn site of some sort would generate a nice income.

* real estate/mortgage/business oppertunities -> have you guys heard the one about how a patient needed a brain transplant and had a choice of three brains; the first one of a doctor with a price tag of 99 cents, the second of a lawyer @ 4 bucks, and the third, that of a realtor priced @ $30,000. the patient asks the surgeon, why is the realtor's brain so expensive, surgeon: " simple, it's been barely used" :laugh:. requirements include a license, common sense, confidence/self-starter & other traits needed for sales. I've been in the mortgage brokering biz for over 1.5 years and have seen a lot of $ being made. Being a 100% commission ased salary (at least at most firms) avg. salary varies, but I've seen 18 y/o pulling $10k+ EASY working part-time, I've seen full-time veterans taking home a fraction of that, newbies who have *great* sales abilities banking $20k+/month & going from cold caller to opening their own branch < a year in the biz.

* account executive for a wholesale mortgage lender -> you don't need any experience in the mortgage/finance field, but it is highly recomended (or sales exp). for those that don't know, it's similar to a sales rep position. you have a team which underwrites loans that have been originated from realtors/loan officers/etc. it requires traveling to offices, explaining/selling products. income varies since it's mostly commission based; from my experience i'd say within a couple months it should be ~ $15k given you have the skills/knowledge for this position. (One of the AE's I use for sub-prime loans has an annual salary well into the 7 figure range, but he's been doin it for ~ 5 years and underwrites a large volume)

* life insurance -> sales similar to RE, except less $

* stock/secuties salesperson -> this will prolly take some time to go from cold caller -> licence -> strong clientele base, but the possibility is there

* laser hair removal/skin consultant -> 1 of my sisters friends works @ a laser hair removal establishment in the mall (the one where someone outside is trying to lure you in) anyways, she's getting $60/hour (been doin it for almost a year). works 30-35 hours/week. requires licensing/certification/1 year of skool

* police officer -> they do well depending on the city they are employed in

* drug dealer

* car sales -> requires very specific skills/traits, but if you posses them, $5k/month shouldn't be too hard. requires a lot of hours

* Union Iron worker -> ???

* Tattoo artist

* pizza delivery -> given ideal location $4k/month with tips is doable if you put in 50 hours/week.

* tow truck driver -> requires some exp & capital to buy a flat bed. My cousin did this for quite a while and was avg ~$8k/month, but hours suck.

* Casino Dealer -> $6k+/month with tips

* Construction

* those guys that work for PG&E who go around reading meters or even lineman (requirements) make decent income. i think the meter guys start off at $15/hour, but let's say you're given a route that is supposed to take 8 hours, you do it in 6, get paid for 8 and go home early or take on another route bringing monthly income to ~$3k-$3.5k

Your turn

The absolute best option is to go into business, and get lucky. Pretty much ALL the rich people make it that way. From the Vanderbilts to the Carnegies to the Gateses, history has shown that hard work and good luck trump schooling anytime.

Yeah, but Gates was a Harvard dropout, so if he had the skills to actually get into the world's hardest university, he's no dummy

Trump had wharton, let alone all the money and experience handed down from Fred Trump.

Average wage for mechanics run from $36K to 42K +benefits. Bay Area should be higher. If the wife works, that may be close to 80K a year. Anyway, I think it may be difficult to move into another field especially random ones that require different skill sets and luck i.e. most RE agents make very little and have high costs (advertising) while only the top producers make a lot of money. My feeling is, do what you know. Is your brother interested in opening his own repair shop? Be your own boss. Succeed or fail base on your own skills and fortune.
If not, I would suggest looking into being a Longshoreman. These are highly sought-after, competitive union positions that require basic education and skills and pay close to 100k once you hit midlevel.
That being said, your brother has responsibilities with a wife and kids. Can the family take him being out of work or transitioning into a new field for 1-2-6 months? Lots of things to consider.
Best of luck to him.

Design an uber p.o.s. system. We use a system called "squirrel" where I work, and it is terrible. Actually, any p.o.s. system I have EVER used was lacking.

If you were able engineer a well designed, versatile p.o.s system for the resteraunt and hospitality industries, you could retire early.

Note that the money maker in this would be the p.o.s. software.

Tow truck driver, without a doubt- especially since there is such a shortage of them, most places would hire and train you on the spot. Most of the time, you'll just be on call and not actually working, 7-7.

UPS driver. Many around here make over 100k, though they work long hours and essentially go at it non-stop during xmas time.

How about Dental Hygenist? They only go to school for 2 years (Associates) and pull 25-30/hr range.

Repo man! CA and FL require you to get a license, but it's not very regulated in other states - anyone could do it. It's fairly easy and you pull in ~$150-$250 per car depending on who you get the contract from.

Do they really make that much out there? Around here they get about $15/hr.
