high perf MySql Server on i7

Hello,

I need to build a high performance MySql server, business requirements are :

- support about 50-100 client/s which launch each one complex multi joined Select requests on 15 table (5 tables with 50K records max + 10 tables with 1K records max)

- present resultset into web pages (google style = first page of N ...), average records count returned will be near hundred

- need to reach real time


I notice that all operations on database will be on read only mode and MySql server will be tune to do at its best with the main purpose described above. Of course development and database structure are fully optimized.

My answer is about hardware, I intend to set up the following 8.000$ "beast" :
- core i7 965
- gigabyte + 14GO DDR3
- Fusion IO drive

Do you think it is the best choice ? I will be able to put two or three in parallel. Do i consider, rather than this unusual server, common multi core xeon system?

I have no budget limit.

Another factor is the Network support needed for 100 users accessing one box and accessing one database.

You going to build a Report/Application server also?

You have 100 users who actually know SQL???

I would not trust many people to get Reliable Data out of a system unless they know how to build and test and debug their own code.

Denithor, very interesting articles ! I will consider mac pro server too with dual i7 and possibly 32GB ram. Piasabird, application will be used by 3000 employees. A huge Oracle system carry out the transactionnal part I have the read only report/application area to set up, in front of my users i will put a little tomcat cluster, I think (4 x core2quad for example) 16 little cores should be enough to do the job.

I'll give you another hint - change your title to something more descriptive. "high perf" doesn't really cover what you're looking for (at all) and won't draw the smart networking gurus in here to look. I've seen previous threads that have run into the hundreds of posts from people looking for gear like you are but you gotta get the right people posting.
