They heat up the housings to the point of melting, blind everyone because the beam pattern is WAY off, and can explode.

I'll just save up the grand for OEM HIDs in my jetta. Theyre from germany, and legal in the US. Not like i'll ever get them... darn you EuroCullen. (VWvortex seller)

ha! funny u mention eurocullen. i was just over there in VWvortex looking at his new GB for the phillips/hella 4300K and 6000K retrofit kits. considering buying them for my GTI. right now i have the regular DOT halogen housing, and was about to get the Ecodes. but then someone told me that the Ecodes for the Golf/GTI doesnt really make that much difference with HIDs. now for the jetta, u HAVE to get Ecodes for correct beam pattern if u get HIDs

btw. im considering getting the 6000K kit. u guys think that'd be too blue?

The most evil OEM lights to have in your rearview are the Honda S2000. Don't know if it's because it has such a tight suspension or what, but they flicker all over the place.

nothing pisses me off more than idiot ricers putting $700 HIDs into their $1500 honda and fvcking blinding everyone on the road. I want to take a goddamn crowbar to their headlights.

i have factory xenon's in my bmw and they autolevel. if you want gd HIDs, get a real job and a real car that was calibrated and setup for HIDs.

Phillips does make HID units but for "offroad" use... it's similar to the situation with Sylvania's HID units. They can be used for normal driving but their legality is different from state to state. They aren't DOT approved on cars without OE HIDs.

One of these days I wanna put a rally-style light pod on my road car just to see who would be crazy enough to mess with me.

My dad showed him they weren't on and even turned on his high beams to show the cops the light get brighter. Then the cop was like umm...well they're off now that you pulled over but while you were driving the high beams were on. It's funny how he back tracked because he initially told my dad his high beams were still when he first spoke to my dad. Well he wrote out the ticket anyways.

Moral of the story, cops can be dicks, and if you can get a ticket for diving a car with OEM HIDs then you can easily get a ticket for aftermarket HIDs.

I think the moral of that story is that your dad needs to aim his lights.

ouch dude, you don't need to be a d*** just b/c you make enough money to overpay for a german car...

and you should really get that road rage in check before you take that overpriced deutsche ride on the road.

for the record, i'm putting 375 dollar HID's on my 26,000 dollar honda. with more power and the same amenities as a 3 series, for 6-8k less on the purchase price and thousands less in maintenance over the course of the car's life, i wonder why you refer to us 'ricers' as idiots...

anyway, to address the topic of the thread *AHEM*... i ordered the lights sometime last week and the 9006 model is on backorder. However, as a fine example of the e-tailer's customer service right off the bat, one of the owners called me a day after my order and told me about the backorder status and exactly when i can expect the shipment. he also offered to cancel my order in case i didn't want to wait. I decided to keep the order since i'm out of the country now anyway.

I will post back about the quality of and ease of install of the HID lights in question, after i come back to the US.

I gotta ask my brother, but I think these are what he has on his car... He calls them 'brighters', because they are brighter than his brights.

Nice attitude. Like anything else, for some people their car is their hobby. They really shouldn't have to hear your rant because they want to add something aftermarket to their ride. The fact is, an HID setup can be done in a car that didn't have them as OEM, it just requires knowledge to put together. For some people, that's a challenge and it's fun. Don't you have any hobbies? If so, you should be able to relate.

If I were to go and put HID's in my Supra, I'd bet you wouldnt whine. Actually, I'd bet you wouldn't know well enough that they weren't factory. Don't complain based on the value of someone else's car. The question is, would you and your BMW see anything but my tail lights?

Oh no man don't make me start! My '98 M3 with tri-flow exhaust and an active autowerke stage3 turbo setup will wipe the floor with you. If only the preceding were true ...
Supras are dang nice cars, 'nough said. Question is, is it the turbo or the N/A ?

The reason STIs and S2000's flicker in your rearview is because of the sharp beam cutoff that is necessary to cut down on glare. When the car hits bumps, you get the "flicker" effect because the beam cutoff line is being raised and lowered, giving you bursts of the bright light you would see all the time in a car that does not have the correct housings for true HID lights. If you park a car with projector housings near a white wall, you'll see the beams cuts off sharply all the way across the top and the light gets more intense the lower it is.

Without a projector housing the beam would just fade as it goes up the wall.

Yellowish is the natural color that we see best in (since it's the color of sunlight).

It's already been somewhat addressed, but yellow is not the color we see best in, nor is it the color of daylight. Don't confuse the actual color of the sun with the light is emits. Daylight is recognized as 5500 K which is almost a pure, white light. Too much yellow is just as bad as too much blue. The reason HIDs increase visibility is because they are able to more accurately reproduce daylight, which in turn increases the lumens while using less wattage.

I thought daylight was supposed to be 4100K?

I've got 6000K HIDs in my SUV and they have a slightly bluish tint.

Depends on what time of day it is. Before noon and sunset is slightly lower than the brightest part of the day. Daylight is recognized as the sunniest part of the day around noon.

Here's a little color temp info
