High-Speed chases. Do they EVER work out in favor of the suspect?

We see all these cop shows and sometimes hear about it on the news. I personally cannot remember a single instance of a high speed pursuit where the suspect sucessfully manages to evade being caught. Does it ever happen? Silly criminals.

I am sure it happens. There have been many high speed pursuits of a couple bikers that screw around on the freeway here in St Louis, where they have gotten away. One after stopping to put gas in his bike lol However, I bet it happens much less in a car with all the communications cops have now.

My uncle was doing like 80 on the highway once at night. He had a cop right behind him, which he never noticed. He drove even faster at like 115 mph for several miles, because he thought someone was following him , until the cop finally pulled him over. He just told the cop that he got scared, and thought someone was trying to follow him. So he only got a regular ticket, instead of reckless driving! :Q

those shows are propaghanda. Think about it, why would they show that the police could be beaten? More people would try it.

Yes it does happen a lot. Police will sometimes call off a chase because it has become too dangerous to pursue. It happened here in Delaware last week and the guy they were pursuing was a suspected murderer. Usually once they get a helicopter involved the chase is pretty much over, but if there's no helicopter, than you have a decent chance of getting away.

Of course they do, if you're out flying on the country roads at night and get chased, if you get a big enough lead you can duck into a driveway near other cars and kill your lights and get away pretty easy. You just don't hear about all the get aways!

I want to hear Fish Alot's story though

I remember when I was about 19 and had a very fast Z-28. I was cruising the biway when a fast looking GTO pulled to the light next to me. After a few glances, we knew there was going to be a race. The light turned green, and in a barage of tire smoke we both took off. Within a few seconds we were both well over 100 MPH and still accelerating quickly. On the other side of the highway, we could see a police car slowing down, turning on his lights, and starting to cross over the median. Being in the right lane, I quickly slowed down at the next intersection and started doing 'zig zags' through the side street until I was miles away. Whew - it was sure nice to get home that night! BTW - I was winning that goat!

If you could only jam the cop's communication system, then you probably could get away.

My older brother lives in San Francisco and rides a green Yamaha R-1 (170hp, 0-60 in 3.5sec if you can hang on) which he has named "Green Destiny"...he ditches cops all the time in Berkeley,CA. He always rides fast...so when he get's caught in the city he normally just keeps on speeding and makes a few turns to loose the cop.

Cops turns lights on...brother hits the gas makes a turn, does 0-60 again in 3.5 seconds, makes a turn and 0-60's, makes a turn then find's a nice spot for a shot of espresso.

Says he done it by himself and with a friend about four or five times in total...all in Berkeley, CA. If you know Berkeley at all, you know the streets are perfect for loosing squad cars if your on a bike...traffics not too heavy, a lot of short streets with a lot of stop signs...it is apparently easy to loose cops in about 2-3 turns in these conditions.

However, when my brother gets caught on a highway he pulls over because there is no where to run. And yes...my brother is proud of it and in all other respects an upstanding citzen. In all of his years of riding he been pulled over at least ten times but has only received two tickets; usually the chp start asking him about his nice bike or his height (my brother is 6'7&quot or something.

One his friends, whom I also know, almost got caught doing this...when the cop flashed him from about 100 feet back he did the turn and burn number like I said above...he then pulled over at a McDonald's to get some food. About 10 minutes later the cops saw his bike and stopped and started questioning/harassing him. However, this was before all squad cars had camera's in the cars recording all the action so the cops had no proof that he was the guy who ditched them...since he had been parked at MAC's for about 10 minutes some of the people there were defending my brother's friend. The cops were trying to get him to confess saying they'd just give him a ticket and impound his bike but not arrest him. My bro's friend held out to the end so the cops had to let him go... as far as I know, he still speeds like a maniac to this day.

cops don't pursue motorcycle chases in georgia. It a danger to society to even attempt to catch a bike with their cruisers. makes sense.

friend of mine a long time ago, was questioned by the police, regarding "42 eluding an officer charges". they never got his plates, but knew it was hime

minimunch: your brother is 6'7" and rides a Yamaha R-1? I'm 6', got on an R1 once and needed a chiropractor after I dismounted. How the he!! does he ride that thing?

BTW, the cops are supposed to break off if it's dangerous. It actually can be a defense; if caught and ticketed and you can show the cop had to hit 130 mph to catch you, you may get off. (The cop would have to admit to breaking the law to catch you.)

<<(170hp, 0-60 in 3.5sec if you can hang on) >>

I would have thought a motorcycle with that kind of power would be even quicker than that - is that more or less the attainable limit for acceleration on a motorcycle?

Yeah, that's pretty weak. I can easily hit 170mph (188 is the fastest I've taken it to) and 0-60 in 3.7 in my Z.

Most likely his 0-60 time is much faster (closer to 3 flat).

Yes, the perp gets away quite often in high-speed chases. Depends on the road, the perp's car, driving skill, and how much support the cop has. Considering the vast number of backroads in my area, I'd say the speeder gets away 40% of the time (or more).

GrimReefer,
that movie went on forever!!!
the porsche outran the cop about 30 seconds into the chase and just kept circling around town for the rest of the 10 minutes.

The police are allowed to break the law to catch you. How would they otherwise?

High speed pursuits are handled differently in each locale. Most police forces state that if the pursuit appears to danger civilians, they must break off. But, cops are human, and there is an ego issue at stake. Many will not break off a high speed pursuit.

I remember here in town a bank got robbed and the robbers were going through town at a high speed. The news helicopters were following overhead and giving the street by street turns. People were honking and calling the police. They chopper said that the police were ordered back, but many did not. The cop who caught the robber got a medal.

yea, they have a total "no chase" policy here. On the other hand, I wouldn't try to run in the first place. Another thing is, I try to stay below 10mph over the limit.

I've beaten cops on back roads and small town stuff, but on a real highway I doubt there's much of a chance at all.
