High-tech mattresses (TempurPedic, Sleep Number) - worth it??

My bed is literally killing me. :\

I'm seriously considering the high-tech mattress brands out there, like TempurPedic and Sleep Number. They are so much more expensive though. Wondering if anyone here has used either one of these, and if you think they are worth the extra cost or not.

I have a TempurPedic and wish I would have bought it AGES ago. Love it. Not for everyone, some people don't like how firm it is or it gets "hot" for them.

I found the Tempur Pedic too hot even from 5 minutes in a cool store. We have a Sealy Optimum. It has some sort of cooling gel infused into it. Must work well since I stay relatively cool and Tempur Pedic recently started marketing something similar.

We've also had a couple of Sleep Number beds. My opinion is still mixed on those. The one I bought originally (twin) felt great. The more expensive queen size my wife and I bought wasn't nearly as comfy for some reason. We never did figure that one out.

Look at a Dream Foam Bedding 13" gel memory foam on Amazon. Many reviews rank it very close or equal to Tempurpedic for much less money.

No, you should buy the least expensive you find comfortable. Currently at Costco they have their sale on the Novaform Queen size for $399 in store.

Opera has a TempurPedic I do believe. She likes it, but as people here have said they get warm. Me personally, I could sleep on a rock and not give a shit. And that's with me having a herniated disk.

We purchased our first expensive mattress last year, a Sealy Beautyrest Black. It's friggin' amazing, and my only regret is that I haven't been sleeping on such a thing for most of my life.

I don't like the TempurPedic, I don't care so much for SleepNumber either except their bedding.

My parent's and brother have probably mid-5 figures of Sleep Number beds in their homes.

I need a new mattress, I am picky. I bought a really good one off Mattress Firm for our 16 year old that replaced his mattress in my guest room that was about 3-4x more expensive.

I have a sleep number. I think the 5 series. It was a lot better than the foam mattress we had that was not a TempurPedic.

Lots of people at work have been getting the sleep number beds and they rave about them. People who didn't even complain about back issues said they feel so much better. They didn't know what a good back was supposed to feel like.

Smells a bit for first 24-48 hours then goes away. At least that's what happened to me.

We actually bought a mattress set after a Carnival Cruise years back that are very nice.

Carnival Comfort mattresses.

My wife fell in love with them and bought it without me even knowing at the time, she loved it so well.

The bed was the best part of that cruise actually, I prefer Princess or Royal Carribean over them myself.

I'm not even sure they sell them anymore in their collection anymore, I was trying to find them online.

These guys were making em at the time, it is a nice mattress.

In 2005 Carnival Cruise Lines introduced a new stateroom sleep system called the Carnival Comfort Collection. Manufactured exclusively for Carnival by Harbor Linen, the system features custom pillows, duvet and cover, pillowcases and a mattress set. Carnival began to offer customers the opportunity to purchase their bedding for home because it was popular among guests. In 2006 it was the most sought-after cruise-oriented holiday gift, according to CruiseCritic.com.

I used to have a foam pad for a bed myself.

Just the foam for awhile, more or less.

1) Read and bookmark this site to determine the mattress type you're interested in.

2) If you're a CostCo member or know someone who is, they have a great deal on memory foam in their warehouses.
Otherwise there's a larger selection on CostCo.com for example this.

A few things you should know about memory foam:
They tend to sleep warm and retain heat, I'm not crazy about it but my wife who is always cold doesn't mind. Go figure.
Pay attention to the density ours is 4 lbs which is perfect.

i have that one. I hate it. It's 13" of foam, or something like that. About 12 of those inches are a built in foam base that is really firm. I ended up getting a Tempurpedic queen mattress topper and it's much better now.

I have a knock off version of TempurPedic. I like it much better than regular spring beds now that I'm used to it.

Honestly I prefer the latex mattress we recently got to the sleep number beds I've slept in. I knew heat would be an issue for me so I stayed well clear of the memory foam options.

The nice thing about latex mattresses is they allow for different firmness levels on each side of the mattress. While not as easy to adjust as a sleepnumber bed they come in layers that can be moved around or even exchanged. Our is a three layer 10" mattress. My wife is firm, medium, soft layers from bottom to top while I am a firm medium medium. The cost for a queen with foundation and two pillows was $1850 which is much less than what I would think what would be the comparable memory foam sleep number option (starting at $2600 on their website)

I used to wake up with some lower back pain on our pillow top. Also, if I slept on my side I would wake up with a very sore shoulder and likely a numb arm. Now I have no back pain and no arm numbness. Occasionally there is a slight shoulder soreness but no even close to what it was before.

I also find it to be slightly cooler than our pillow top and much cooler than even the 'gel infused' memory foams I've tried. Next to no motion transfer either. FWIW I enjoy sex on it more than the pillow top too

Supposedly another big benefit of latex is that it won't break down as quickly as a pillow top (or even memory foam but to less of an extent). They use less chemicals than other mattresses if that matters to you. They are also supposed to be hypoallergenic although I remain skeptical since it still has a cover. I did notice my allergies cleared up a lot but I suspect that would also be the case with any new mattress at first

They do tend to smell over time.

Buy the protective cover that is meant for bedbugs and habitual bedwetters and it will keep the foam in near perfect condition and keep out those smells.

I like tuftandneedle.com

comes with a 30 night trial and 7 year warranty. Queen size is under $600.

They are cheap because they don't have any retail point, everything is done online. Reviews are pretty solid.
