Higher DDR or better CAS?

I'm thinking about upgrading my valueram Kingston memory to something more prone to over clocking.

As I understand it, one way to over clock is to simply raise the FSP/HTT and use RAM rated at a higher frequency (and then maybe lower the multiplier if you have to).

Or you can change timing settings.

And if I got this right, you want ram that's something like 2-2-2-5 if you want to change timings, but if its rated at say 250mhz then you can just go to 250mhz.

Am I on track?

If you are using A64 go for the higher FSB. If you are using Pentium go as far as possible with low timings.

I think you've got that backwards...

I did some tests myself for this very same question. I ran a benchmark program and got 3000 with 2.2ghz(stock) and 2-2-2-5 timings. I loosened the timings to be able to raise the FSB to 218 so it was 2.4ghz and looosened them to 2.5-3-3-8 and got 3230.

What you should so, is get Low Latency (CAS) memory like Crucial Ballistix or OCZ [insert rating here] EL Memory. While keeping a low latency you can bring up the speed of the FSB/HTT. A recent article had OCZ PC3200 EL Platinum Rev2 at DDR636.

You can still overclock very well LL memory. And if you so decide to run your machine at stock speed for less demanding apps, you get better performance at DDR400.

Holy balls, Painman. I think you just saved me 2-300 dollars!

So it looks like the thing to do then is increase my FSB/HTT to get a CPU speed increase and then use a divider on the memory to keep it running within acceptable ranges? A divider is a ratio, right?

I need to make a signature

Lower latency (2-2-2-5) PC3200 will outperform higher latency / higher clock memory until about DDR 440 or so depending on timings. By DDR500, forget it, the clock speed wins. I've looked at this myself with the OCZ Platinum Rev2 since you it runs DDR400 2-2-2-5 to DDR533 3-3-3-8 and others inbetween. If you get some memory like that, you can set timings and see where the sweet spot is.

2th.
