Higher refresh rate than possible with DVI-D

I'll try to keep it short...

I have a LG 34UC97 capable of 3440x1440 and 60Hz refresh.

I have an older video card Geforce 560 Ti. (I don't really game anymore)

Monitor auto detects 3440x1440 with 30Hz refresh. No problem.

I create a custom resolution and refresh with 3440x1440 @ 50Hz. Noticeably smoother. No problem!

I decide to go further than what's possible with the DVI-D spec and push 3440x1440 @ 60Hz and again it gets even smoother. This is definitely not placebo. How is this possible? What's the reason I can get data rates faster than the DVI-D spec? Would there be any negative side effects of pushing it to this rate?

Thanks

There are actually monitors that run Dual Link DVI at 2560x1600 @ 75Hz. So that would be equivalent to pushing 3440x1440 @ 63Hz.

So in general you can run it faster than spec, but you might have connection problems. Might take some doing though, I remember you can oc your output chip somehow.

You're not exceeding the spec for dual link dvi.

Thanks everyone! There's are all very helpful responses! I guess I didnt read the Wikipedia link regarding DVI thoroughly enough.

There is in fact no maximum spec for DL-DVI. SL-DVI yes, but it's a misconception that DL-DVI has a maximum spec that is twice that of SL-DVI

See this, for instance: http://overlordforum.com/topic/68-to...post/#entry621
Thank you very much for this link. A very interesting and informative read and I found references to your statement about no maximums. Thanks!

No problem. Now, you said you achieved a real 60Hz OC with this monitor. Great if true. How did you verify it? In ToastyX's post that I linked, he was using Refresh Rate Multitool. That one still works but it's a little easier to use BlurBusters' TestUFO page. Did you use either of these?

At the time of my post I used my eyeballs to verify. Then I later used testufo.com to verify again with real numbers.

It appears to be detecting 30,50,60Hz as I change my monitor's refresh rate.
