Looking for a PCI card for doing dual monitors with SLI (2 x 7900 GT's), but I can't give up using two monitors, so I figure I might as well get a 3dfx card in the machine for the second monitor...

It's just going to be running 2D @ 1280x1024. And I wouldn't mind doing some Glide programming again with it.

Voodoo5 5500 is the fastest released 3Dfx card. Voodoo5 6000 was the fastest prototype, theres a couple floating around but collectors are willing to pay a lot for one. I wouldn't suggest either of them to anyone using a modern computer with Windows XP considering how much better a similarly priced modern card would be. Unless you're gunna do some Glide action . I love my Voodoo3 3000 PCI. I wish I could program Glide. Did u make anything cool?

Keep in mind that there's no official drivers for WinXP, 3Dfx went out of business before it came out. I never tried a 3Dfx card on WinXP but I heard is not too bad. There might be official Win2000 drivers but I don't remember.

Heres a couple sites:
This is like a mirror of the old official site with added stuff.
A bunch of good files here.
Some more goodies

While it would be nice running Glide, I have to wonder how well it would handle XP, or even Vista. Although with it being rendered and all, I wonder if Vista would work in SLI.

Ugh, what a pain in the ass. I might just have to deal with disabling SLI mode for dual monitors I guess.... Fun fun.

It's probably best to get a 6200 or something instead of a 3dfx card. You will need to mess around with third party drivers to get the 3dfx cards working at all and they're probably too old to have DVI ports (and the 2D analog quality may not be up to par with that of modern cards).

The 3dfx cards are great for many old Glide-only games, although many of those need DOS or 95/98 to run properly.

i have a voodoo 5 5500 and it runs fine under XP. to enable glide hardware support, you need to install some 3rd party drivers, but they work just fine (glide + diablo2 = ownage)

diablo 2 isn't even 3d. what did glide do for that game?

Seconded, better to grab a cheap PCI X1300, GF6200 or GF5200 for use with multiple monitors.

Since you only stated dual monitors though, I am going to assume your current card only has support for 1 monitor? Most modern cards can do two monitors, even the cheap ones.

As has been already stated the answer is the Voodoo 5 5500 but it's much better to get a cheap ATi or nVidia PCI card now.

I should know I own both models...and as soon as I can find one I'll get a 6000 in my collection as well.

but for the non believers read below.

Pretty sure there was a Voodoo 5 5500 PCI, and the Voodoo5 5000 was a 32MB card that was never released.

my PCI model is a 64mb version and is identified by it's drivers as a 3DFX Voodoo 5 5000 PCI....same goes for the ID sticker on the back of the card.

My AGP version is a 5500 and is identified as such.

The 5500 was huge though. If you're just looking to run some Glide apps and have good 2D, I'd suggest looking for a Voodoo 4 4500 PCI version. Get the Voodoo 3 2000/3000 if you want passive cooling.

Yup yup. Hey Voodoo 5s and 3s outperformed everyone in Unreal Tournament which was BEST in Glide =). By everyone I meant the Radeon and GF2 which clearly slaughtered the Voodoos in everything else. If you get a Voodoo, that thing will be an ancient relic. It may be worth millions. I'll hold onto my Voodoo 3 2000 PCI. After all, it is my backup card becuase I only have backup AGP Cards and moving to PCI-e causes troubles like this. Hell, I used my Voodoo 3 2000 for a good month when Ibuilt my system last year before my 7800gt arrived.

Nega-teev. It was best in MeTaL with the exclusive high-resolution textures. Glide was the fugliest option, being limited to low-res and low colour plus 3dfx's proprietary banding and washed-out effects; double-plus Blur-O-Vision if unfortunate to be using a Voodoo 2 (or two) with the requisite external cables.

Hmmm... Wondering what type of Video cards we would be using if it were not for all the 3dfx technology stolen by theyre competition.

Just the second monitor. I want to have dual monitors, which is the most important thing. I am considering doing SLI later, and am considering possibilities for doing SLI with dual monitor. So far, my options are a) get another card, and I miss 3dfx stuff, so I figure I might try out one of them as the card for the second monitor, or b) manually (hot key??) disable SLI so that the card can power both monitors...

1,000 VSA-100 chips slapped onto a PCB the size of a wall.

Besides, where did u get the notion that anythign from 3dfx was stolen? The only 3dfx technology that is currently being used is SLI, and from what I understand SLI then and SLI now are very different.

In any case, 3dfx was bought by Nvidia, so no one really stole anything.
