Off topic but how the fuck has the Highlander gotten so big? When I rented it in 2005 it was the size of today's Rav4. Now it's the size of a 4Runner.

Pretty much the case with every generation car compared to its predecessors.

For instance, look at Accord 2 generations ago and current Civic.

Gets like 2 mpg, same as the path finder. Right now btw the 2012 Pathfinder is going for a song, it's much cheaper than I've ever seen on a new pilot or highlander. I'd personally look at one at the moment, even though it does require premium and does get damned horrendous mileage.

17/23 vs 20/25..

A truck platform, separate body frame is out of question, also out of question is Nissan, had two Nissans, still own one, long term reliability is horrible...

We've had great luck with our Murano. I'd also not dismiss the Equinox out of hand. If those last anywhere near what our supposedly "trouble prone" '02 Blazer did (250K miles over 10 years, incl. lots of quite heavy towing), it should be one excellent vehicle. If I were buying new, I'd definitely look at that.

We looked at the Pilot....hated the seats. Uncomfortable. Was a deal breaker.

The Highlander was another choice we were looking into. But given Toyota's declining reliability, figured the Nissan choice was about as good, and it's proven to be....so far.

Highlander...

We bought one in 2003 before the third row seating was even an option. V6 2wd. loved everything about it. It now has 112000 miles on it and still runs just fine. Its my daily driver. Last year we needed another car and looked at both the pilot AWD and the Highlander AWD and ended up with the highlander for a few reasons

They seem to hold up really well bodywise. In Massachusetts we see alot of salt on the roads and there is still no rust on the old one and I haven't been too good about washing it in the past few years.

They tow well. We've had two campers and two different boats and there is no problem towing. We did get the AWD as some of the boat ramps get slippery towards the fall. With the new Highlander we haven't slipped once with the boat. We went camping to New Hampshire and barely noticed the camper was behind us even on some of the steeper grades. And actually with the older 2WD it was okay too. Just some slipping with older tires

Mechanically they hold up well. We dealer service them. We only had one major repair to an emissions sensor. The cost of the sensor wasn't bad but it was stuck in the exhaust header on the backside of the engine so they had to remove it and replace the header
but the dealer went out of his way to warranty it for us.

With the third row seating down the cargo space in the new one is actually the same as the old one. The pilot seemed smaller for some reason

We liked the body style of the new higlander. Last year when we were looking the Pilot stayle hadn't changed for some time but that may have changed. The limited highlander has larger wheels and tires and just looks better.

They ride really well. When we went to the toyota dealer we were set on getting a forerunner but after driving both we went with the highlander. It was much more comfortable on the road and mild off-road too

We've driven it to Florida and never felt cramped for space.

If you get one the only downfall so far is it is very hard not to speed in it. I thought it was just me as I like to drive fast anyways but my wife had a ticket within the first month of buying it. I've had a few warnings myself.

To be fair I might be less bias if we didn't have such good luck with our 2003 highlander

3rd = VERY NICE, allows the mid rows to be adjustable where you can move it forward and back and this results in a very comfortable ride for the mid row people.

Yeah when I think of rusty vehicles highlander sure isn't on the list. It withstands rust belt living very well. So does the highlander, fwiw. :awe:

If you don't need the extra space (the Pilot feels almost a full size bigger) then go with the Highlander. It has more power, better mpg, has faster acceleration, is lighter and gets better crash safety ratings.

The Pilot is better if you need more space, more cargo room and more utility. For example, it can fit 3 baby seats across while the Highlander cannot.

I just looked up pictures of both 2013 models and damn, they are both hideous. WTF is going on with car designs lately...

Honestly a minivan would be better for OP's needs anyway. Larger, cheaper, more efficient on gas.

They are too big, wont fit my garage and definitely do not need that much real estate on daily basis, besides, they are "minivan" much more soccer mom-ish. Gas mileage too is definitely not better than highlander, although Odyssey does get better mileage than Pilot.
As for as price goes, they are not much different, I am looking at Limited and a sienna with same features is probably just $500 less.

Drove one today, later found out it was SE, I wanted to drive limited, it's wheels are 2 inch bigger. Wonder how much difference it would make.
Dimwit sales person, showed me about 5 different ones, confused the hell out of me, I told him I wanted Limited but still somehow he managed to make me test drive a SE. later realized that I told him that I did not want Navigation and he could not find one without nearby...

Want to wait for 2013, hopefully I can get a good deal on a 12 at that time... thoughts?

When next gen comes out they will heavily discount the prior, but it looks like the next highlander gen will be a 2014 model year... scant little online about it frankly. Like with the rav4 I find plenty of articles from different dates that are conflicting.

You should be able to do fairly well without waiting as dealers have been hungry and I believe most are clearing out now. If you get several dealerships competing for your business via email & phone, and are armed with an idea what the dealers paid, what others in your zip code are paying, etc. Such places as truecar.com and others will show you dealer price, invoice price and average paid, fair, good or great price etc. and can even send your contact info off to several dealers who will make you an offer. You previously mentioned “Consumer Reports” and their online service plus subscription has that feature and you might want to check it out.

Just ask these dealers for their best price while letting them know you have also contacted several dealerships. These guys generally will go as low as they can and are not be able to use many “sales techniques” when you shop this way.

Lots of good information is available from other peoples buying experiences too (Edmunds forum):

Indeed, there has been a drop in price, its about $500 less compared to week back. Zag - USAA, overstock and Costco, showing about $500 less than overstock. Is their price a good price or can I get any lower? I am not a good haggler, dont want to spend days going back and forth between dealers just for a few hundred dollars... I am thinking of sticking with the zag price and see what happens. 0% ends October 2nd, next week want to zero in on something... Any last piece of advise?
Oh btw, as of now leaning towards Highlander, but will be visiting the Honda dealer on Monday...

Ouch. Its unfortunate you've limited your choices here.

But given the choices I would pick the Highlander. It looks so boring....but it is not ugly.
