Nothing personal, but that kind of comment makes me sick. 64MB will add a nice boost to a system with 128MB. If you currently have 64MB, adding one more chip will be a fantastic upgrade, especially for high quality SDRAM that only cost $30!!

Which brings me to the age-old question:

If you already have 128 MB and you're in Win95/98/SE, how much does an extra 64 or 128 MB help?

I've heard people extoll the virtues of 256 MB in WinME/2000. But I've heard those same people say that anything over 128 in 95/98 is a "waste", because the OS doesn't handle the extra memory very well.

Any opinions? I have 128MB now, and I'm using 98 SE.

true, in win95/98 over 128 megs, you will see little performance increase. Or at least, it won't be as significant as it would in a NT or 2000 machine. It only makes a difference when running major apps or many at a time, but most people don't do that in win 98.

It will only make a diff if you are running memory intensive programs like Photoshop, Dreamweaver or Games. If the system is being used primarily for MS Office type applications then 128MB is plenty and any increase over that would only produce marginal gains.

I found a big benefit in going from 128 to 192 megs. With 128 whenever I would exit out of a game or large program there would be a delay before I would get back to windows, now with 192 no wait at all. I'm upgrading to 256 since ram is so cheap to see if I get even more benefit. But, i would definitely spend 30 bucks to go from 128 to 192. You really can't lose anything except 30 bucks.

Well since most Windows applications often do not return the resources they use after they are shut down, more than 128 megs is always helpful. On my p3-866 w/ 128 megs under Win98SE, I would often run out of physical memory after running only a few apps. Now with 256 megs and WinME, it's running better.

If you can spring the bucks, get more memory.

Also, I upgraded from 128mb to 256 and importing into and opening large scanned files in photoshop is so much faster.

I personally have 256 megs of pc100 crucial...my old board only support pc100 so, I saved some money that way. Anyway...I noticed a marginal increase in perfo in Win 98 when I upped from 128 to 256...but nothing special, all it really meant was that I could wait longer to reboot when the system resources get bogged down.

Yhea, I got 384 megs of PC133 on WIN98 and I can hardly even tell a difference from 128. It really is just a waste... RAM is so darn cheap lately that I keep buying buying buying... just can't stop. Got get a copy of win2000!

WinME wastes RAM, it's like a pig. I have 384MB on my system, but it still runs out.
After loading Eudora, then shutting that down and loading IE, and then shutting IE down and playing a little Diablo 2, I have 24MB of RAM free when I quit D2. WinME's memory management is horrible, it doesn't do any "garbage collection" when an application is terminated. I use memturbo to defrag my RAM and get memory back. I think buying memturbo is better than going from 256->384.

I have few systems with W98SE, and W98ME.

Upgrading from 64MB to 128MB, provide you with the push to functionality.

64MB more to 192MB provide you with smooth capacity to work without the worry of closing ?Piggish? programs. e.g. Word, and you can keep few IE55 windows open, and the system will run smoothly.

Above 192MB, I did not experienced any difference.

I jumped in on this deal.

If it makes a difference to anyone, I got it from Staples only two days after placing my order.

So far, after several hours of limited use , I have noticed no significant difference between 128 and 192 Megs on Win98SE. Maybe it's like whoever said it before, that it'll only be noticed in 98 if one has many IE windows open, or something along those lines...

Oh, and so far, even though it's rated CAS 3, it's been running just fine at CAS 2 @ 100MHz.

256? Hell, with all this cheap ram out there, i'm going from 128 to 384. Why the heck not? This extra 256 ended up costing me like $70 with shipping and taxes.

And even in Win ME, it makes a huge difference depending on what you do, as said before Photoshop eats up what you give it and so does Acid DJ and some other memory hungry programs.
